A general framework is developed to model a large variety of different cyclic machine scheduling problems with blocking with the objective to minimize the cycle time. For this framework tabu search algorithms are developed. Neighborhoods are derived which generalize the block-approach based neighborhoods which have been successfully applied to noncyclic job-shop problems and cyclic job-shop pro...

The paper considers a three-machine shop scheduling problem to minimize the makespan, in which the route of a job should be feasible with respect to a machine precedence digraph with three nodes and one arc. For this NP-hard problem that is related to the classical flow shop and open shop models, we present a simple 1.5approximation algorithm and an improved 1.4-approximation algorithm.

In previous work we introduced a simple constraint model that combined generic AI strategies and techniques (weighted degree heuristic, geometric restarts, nogood learning from restarts) with naive propagation for job shop and open shop scheduling problems. Here, we extend our model to handle two variants of the job shop scheduling problem: job shop problems with setup times; and job shop probl...

We present a comprehensive complexity analysis of classical shop scheduling problems subject to various combinations of constraints imposed on the processing times of operations, the maximum number of operations per job, the upper bound on schedule length, and the problem type (taking values “open shop”, “job shop”, “mixed shop”). It is shown that in the infinite class of such problems there ex...

The Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem (FJSP) is one of the most general and difficult of all traditional scheduling problems. The Flexible Job Shop Problem (FJSP) is an extension of the classical job shop scheduling problem which allows an operation to be processed by any machine from a given set. The problem is to assign each operation to a machine and to order the operations on the machine...

The first comprehensive survey paper on scheduling problems with separate setup times or costs was conducted by Allahverdi et al. (1999), who reviewed the literature since the mid-1960s. Since the appearance of that survey paper, there has been an increasing interest in scheduling problems with setup times (costs) with an average of more than 40 papers per year being added to the literature. Th...

In this paper, we analyze the characteristics of the dynamic job shop scheduling problem when machine breakdown and new job arrivals occur. A hybrid approach involving neural networks(NNs) and geneticalgorithm(GA) is presented to solve the dynamic job shop scheduling problem as a static scheduling problem. The objective of this kind of job shop scheduling problem is minimizing the completion ti...

The resource constraint project scheduling problem (RCPSP) is an NP-hard benchmark problem in scheduling which takes into account the limitation of resources’ availabilities in real life production processes and subsumes open-shop, job-shop, and flow-shop scheduling as special cases. We here present an application of machine learning to adapt simple greedy strategies for the RCPSP. Iterative re...

Flexible flow shop scheduling problem (also called blended flow shop scheduling problem) is a sort of complex Job Shop Scheduling problem. For the Flexible Flow Shop scheduling problem, only in very special cases, there are polynomial optimal algorithms. In most of the other cases, the problems are NP-Hard. It is a simplification of the original problem to solve Flexible flow shop scheduling wi...

In this paper we investigate the use of three evolutionary based heuristics to the open shop scheduling problem. The intractability of this problem is a motivation for the pursuit of heuristics that produce approximate solutions. This work introduces three evolutionary based heuristics, namely, a permutation genetic algorithm, a hybrid genetic algorithm and a sellsh gene algorithm, and tests th...
