Objective: The current study aimed to determine the efficacy of radioiodine-131 (131I) ablation therapy with thyroid hormone replacement one day before 131I administration in patients with well-differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). Methods: This retrospective study included 29 patients who underwent 131I therapies twice for DTC during 6-12 months.  Since all the patients obviously had residual l...

BACKGROUND Metformin is one of the most widely prescribed antidiabetic medications with a favorable safety profile. In the last decade, several studies have reported a TSH-lowering effect of metformin in patients with diabetes mellitus. OBJECTIVE To review literature data on the role of metformin use on thyroid function tests and the course of thyroid cancer. METHODS WE PERFORMED A SEARCH I...

General aspects Palpable thyroid nodules occur in about 6% of women and 2% of men with higher prevalence in the elderly and in iodine-deficient areas. However, the great majority of thyroid nodules are impalpable and asymptomatic with an estimated prevalence of 20–76% in the general population. These small nodules are increasingly detected by neck ultrasound and parallel the rising incidence of...

Thyroid hormone stimulates cardiac inotropy and chronotropy via direct genomic non-genomic mechanisms. Hyperthyroidism magnifies these effects, resulting in an increase heart rate, ejection fraction blood volume. also affects thrombogenesis this may be linked to a probable tendency toward thrombosis patients with hyperthyroidism. Patients hyperthyroidism are therefore at higher risk for atrial ...

Thyroid cancer is the most common malignancy in endocrine system, composed of four major types; papillary thyroid carcinoma, follicular thyroid carcinoma, anaplastic thyroid carcinoma, and medullary thyroid carcinoma. The incidence of thyroid cancer, especially differentiated thyroid cancer, is increasing in developed countries. Growing body of studies on molecular pathogenesis in thyroid cance...

The risk of cancer is relatively higher in Graves' patients presenting simultaneously with thyroid nodules. Radioiodine (RAI) therapy recommended in high-risk differentiated thyroid carcinoma may be associated with worsening of a pre-existing Graves' orbitopathy (GO) or developing a new onset. The impact of RAI therapy in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer on the course of a pre-exisit...

BACKGROUND Thyroid cancer is an increasingly common malignancy. Although likelihood of survival from well-differentiated thyroid cancer can vary by disease severity, it is not known how patients' life expectancies change the farther they are from time of diagnosis. METHODS Using data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, End Results (SEER) registry, we selected patients diagnosed with well-dif...

BACKGROUND Thyroid cancer ranges from well-differentiated lesions with an excellent prognosis to anaplastic carcinoma, which is almost uniformly fatal. Thus, methods to assess the behavior of thyroid malignancies are necessary to arrive at appropriate treatment decisions. METHODS We discuss the factors that affect the prognosis of patients with well-differentiated thyroid malignancies, includ...

Poorly differentiated thyroid cancer (PDTC) and anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) are rare but highly aggressive malignancies with an extremely short survival. Poor prognosis is due to their unlimited growth, invasion, migration and resistance to common anticancer therapies. Advances in understanding the molecular alterations in thyroid carcinomas led to development of new therapeutic strategies ...

We present the case of a 55-year-old white male with biopsy-proven left inguinal lymph node metastasis from differentiated papillary thyroid cancer. Inguinal node metastasis from papillary thyroid cancer is an extremely rare finding. The case demonstrates that papillary thyroid cancer is capable of metastasis presumably through the lymphatic system to unexpected locations.
