Experimental and modeled dependencies of the induced refractive index on dosage of UV exposure in photo-thermo-refractive glass for different thermal treatment regimes are presented. Resulting spatial profiles of refractive index modulation in a reflecting Bragg grating recorded by a holographic technique are computed, and corresponding diffraction efficiencies are modeled. It is shown that non...

An atom-surface interaction was detected by studying atom diffraction from a rotated material grating. A phasor diagram similar to the Cornu spiral was developed to explain why there are no missing orders in atom diffraction from material gratings. We also show that atom-surface interactions combined with rotated grating structures can produce asymmetric, i.e., blazed, diffraction patterns. Our...

Pseudoscopic (inverted depth) images that keep a continuous parallax were shown to be possible by use of a double diffraction process intermediated by a slit. One diffraction grating directing light to the slit acts as a wavelength encoder of views, while a second diffraction grating decodes the projected image. The process results in the enlargement of the image under common white light illumi...

We observe high-resolution diffraction patterns of a thermal-energy helium-atom beam reflected from a microstructured surface grating at grazing incidence. The grating consists of 10-μm-wide Cr strips patterned on a quartz substrate and has a periodicity of 20 μm. Fully-resolved diffraction peaks up to the 7 order are observed at grazing angles up to 20 mrad. With changes in de Broglie waveleng...

A rigorous analysis is presented of the diffraction efficiency of a polarization-insensitive surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid-crystal (SSFLC) phase grating, taking full account of the internal structure of the ferroelectric liquid-crystal layer. When no field is applied, the twisted director profile in the relaxed state gives an optimum diffraction efficiency for a device thickness betwe...

The diffraction regime of a thin grating inserted in a Fabry–Perot cavity is investigated. Our calculations show that, at Bragg incidence, a single diffraction order can be selectively enhanced, giving rise to a very efficient Bragg-like diffraction regime. The optimization of the device is studied as a function of the resonator thickness and finesse and the grating position inside the Fabry–Pe...

Closed form analytical solutions of diffraction efficiency for transmission surface relief gratings in the resonance domain are presented. These are obtained by modeling the surface relief gratings with equivalent graded index gratings having Bragg properties, so as to allow for an optimum choice of grating parameters that would lead to high diffraction efficiencies. The calculated and experime...

We report a holographically fabricated, optically switchable grating using azo-dye-doped, polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (LCs). Our experiments show that upon photoirradiation, the diffraction of the grating was decreased significantly. We believe that this switching behavior is due to two factors--nematic-isotropic phase transition of LCs and thermal expansion of the grating structure.

A rigorous modal theory describing the diffraction properties of a dielectric lamellar grating is presented . The numerical implementation is shown to be suited to modelling the behaviour of high refractive index gratings . This suggests that an approach of this type may be successfully applied to the problem of lossy metallic lamellar gratings . 1 . Introduction The problem of diffraction by a...
