BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE A simplified antifungal disk diffusion test using Mueller-Hinton agar containing 2% glucose and methylene blue 5 microg/mL (GM-MH, Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute [CLSI] M44-A) has proved to correlate well with the standard reference test. A new azole, voriconazole, has recently been approved for clinical therapy in Taiwan. This study investigated the reliabil...
background and aims. enterococci are gram-positive cocci that often occur in pairs (diplococci) or short chains. beside developing high level of antibiotic resistance, these bacteria can cause wide range of disease in human, thus to help provide an effective treatment for infections caused by this genus, this study was conceived to provide information on enterococcus faecalis antibiotic resista...
Introduction: Mupirocin, an inhibitor of bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, has used to treat staphylococcal skin infections as well as to eliminate nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus. Mupirocin resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains are seen worldwide but there is no report from Iran. In the present study, by using phenotyping methods (disk diffusion and E-test) in combination with P...
Seven laboratories participated in a collaborative study to evaluate the Autobac 1 system. Results obtained with this assay system were compared to those obtained by the standardized Bauer-Kirby disk diffusion test, and each of these two methods was compared to the agar dilution technique. Comparison of the Autobac 1 and the disk diffusion results from the seven laboratories showed an overall a...
Background: Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has been emerged as a nosocomial and community acquired pathogen worldwide. There are many challenges for laboratory detection of MRSA. The aim of this study was to compare different phenotypic methods with PCR based method as a gold standard for detection of mecA gene. <b...
ABSTRACT Background and Objective: One of the main tasks of clinical microbiology laboratories is to determine antibiotic resistance profiles in common pathogens and ensure the selection of effective antibiotics for certain infections. The aim of this study was to compare the methods of disk diffusion, broth microdilution and modified Hodge test i...
Detection of methicillin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus is a challenge, especially low-level resistance, which is often misdiagnosed. The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic accuracies of the automated Vitek 2 system and disk diffusion tests, using cefoxitin and moxalactam, for the detection of methicillin resistance in S. aureus strains. Four sets of genotypically diverse isol...
Clinafloxacin was more active than ciprofloxacin against 4,213 aerobic and facultative anaerobic bacterial isolates from 10 medical centers, as tested by broth microdilution and disk diffusion methods. The percentage of 201 anaerobes susceptible to clinafloxacin by broth microdilution was comparable to cefoxitin. Our data support the proposed disk diffusion interpretive criteria for aerobic bac...
In a context of worldwide emergence of resistance among Streptococcus pneumoniae strains, early detection of strains with decreased susceptibility to beta-lactam antibiotics is important for clinicians. If the 1-microgram oxacillin disk diffusion test is used as described by the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards, no interpretation is available for strains showing zone sizes o...
MICs of erythromycin, clarithromycin, azithromycin, rifampin, gentamicin, and doxycycline against 101 isolates of Rhodococcus equi were determined by broth macrodilution, disk diffusion, and Etest. Categorical agreement ranged between 85.1 and 100%. Overall, the agreement between Etest and disk diffusion was better than the agreement between broth macrodilution and the agar-based methods.
