Recent experiments revealed that the dielectric dispersion spectrum of fission yeast cells in a suspension was mainly composed of two sub-dispersions. The low-frequency sub-dispersion depended on the cell length, whereas the highfrequency one was independent of it. The cell shape effect was qualitatively simulated by an ellipsoidal cell model. However, the comparison between theory and experime...

We investigate the maximum coding rate achievable on a two-user broadcast channel for the case where a common message is transmitted with feedback using either fixed-blocklength codes or variable-length codes. For the fixed-blocklength-code setup, we establish nonasymptotic converse and achievability bounds. An asymptotic analysis of these bounds reveals that feedback improves the second-order ...

We have simulated the heat conduction characteristics of finite length single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with the molecular dynamics method [1-3] with Tersoff-Brenner bond order potential. Temperature at each end of a SWNT was controlled by the phantom technique, and the thermal conductivity was calculated with Fourier’s law from the measured temperature gradient and the energy budgets in ...

A 29 W CW supercontinuum spanning from 1.06 to 1.67 μm is generated in a short length of PCF with two zero dispersion wavelengths. The continuum has the highest spectral power density, greater than 50 mW/nm up to 1.4 μm, reported to date. The use of a short length of PCF enables the continuum to expand beyond the water loss at 1.4 μm. The dynamics of the continuum evolution are studied experime...

A compact fiber laser is demonstrated with use of a Gires-Tournois compensator and a short length (2-4 cm-long) of highly doped ytterbium (Yb) fiber providing net anomalous group-velocity dispersion. With use of a novel semiconductor saturable absorber mirror based on GaInNAs structure, self-started 1.5-ps-pulse mode-locked operation was obtained at 1023 nm with a repetition rate of 95 MHz. A m...

The apodization function plays an important role in the behavior of the mean dispersion, group delay and significant reduction of sidelobe level in reflection spectrum. On the other hand, the grating length represents as one of the critical parameters in contributing to a high performance fiber Bragg grating compensator. In this paper, we have investigated and compared the performances of vario...

We show analytically how periodic spinning affects the polarization mode dispersion of a fiber in three different practical regimes that are determined by the values of three length scales: the beat length, the birefringence correlation length, and the spin period. We determine in which limits the spin is effective in reducing the mean differential group delay.

In this work, we use Drude-Lorents model description to study the radiation of a charged particles moving in a homogeneous dispersive medium. A suitable quantized electromagnetic field for such medium is utilized to obtain proper equations for energy loss of the particle per unit length. The energy loss is separately calculated for transverse and longitudinal components of the filed operators. ...

An experimental study has been made of the hydrodynamics of a stage mixer-settler to obtain appropriate design information. In this paper several tests were done according to full factorial design of experiments with high reliability, since each test recurs seven times and the results of  them are very close to each other(P=1bar and T=25 °C). Sauter diameter in each test is determined with ...

The spatial distribution of stars in a disk of a galaxy can be described by a radial scale length and a vertical scale height. The ratio of these two scale parameters contains information on the axis ratio of the velocity ellipsoid, i.e. the ratio of the vertical to radial stellar velocity dispersions of the stars, at least at some fiducial distance from the center. The radial velocity dispersi...
