In this seminar behaviour of liquid droplets on a very hot surface is presented and a simple model is introduced to describe droplet evaporation. Special cases where droplet dynamics is involved are mentioned, important processes and their qualitative description is presented. This seminar supplements a previous seminar Leidenfrost effect, presented in December 2011.
Evaporation of a sessile droplet is a complex, nonequilibrium phenomenon. Although evaporating droplets upon superhydrophobic surfaces have been known to exhibit distinctive evaporation modes such as a constant contact line (CCL), a constant contact angle (CCA), or both, our fundamental understanding of the effects of surface roughness on the wetting transition remains elusive. We show that the...
Condensation of a spherically symmetric submicrometer size vapor bubble is studied using diffuse interface hydrodynamic model supplemented by the van der Waals equation of state with parameters characteristic for argon. The bubble, surrounded by liquid, is held in a container of constant volume with temperature of the wall kept fixed. The condensation is triggered by a sudden rise of the wall t...
The evolving composition of evaporating ethanol-water droplets (initially 32.6 or 45.3 microm radius) is probed by stimulated Raman scattering over the period 0.2 to 3 ms following droplet generation and with a surrounding nitrogen gas pressure in the range 10 to 100 kPa. The dependence of the evaporation rate on the relative humidity of the surrounding gas phase is also reported. The measured ...
We consider the dynamics of a slender, evaporating droplet containing nanoparticles. We use lubrication theory to derive a coupled system of equations that govern the film thickness and the concentration of nanoparticles. These equations account for capillarity, Marangoni stresses, evaporation, and disjoining pressure; the nanoparticle-induced structural component of the disjoining pressure is ...
A comprehensive numerical and experimental investigation on micrometer-sized water droplet impact dynamics and evaporation on an unheated, flat, dry surface is conducted from the standpoint of spray-cooling technology. The axisymmetric time-dependent governing equations of continuity, momentum, energy, and species are solved. Surface tension, wall adhesion effect, gravitational body force, cont...
In this work, we provide a simple method to represent the contact line dynamics of an evaporating sessile droplet. As a droplet evaporates, two distinct contact line dynamics are observed. They are collectively known as modes of evaporation, namely Constant Contact Radius (CCR) and Constant Contact Angle (CCA). Another intermediate mode-Stick-Slide (SS) or mixed mode is also commonly observed. ...
Large-eddy simulation of an evaporating isopropyl alcohol spray in a coaxial combustor is performed. The Favre-averaged, variable density, low-Mach number NavierStokes equations are solved on unstructured grids with dynamic subgrid scale model to compute the turbulent gas-phase. The original incompressible flow algorithm for LES on unstructured grids by Mahesh et al. (J. Comp. Phy., 2004, 197, ...
We developed and characterized a novel picoliter droplet-in-oil array generated by a double-inkjet printing method on a uniform hydrophobic silicon chip specifically designed for quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis. Double-inkjet printing was proposed to efficiently address the evaporation issues of picoliter droplets during array generation on a planar substrate without the ...
