Zonally-symmetric fluctuations of the mid-latitude westerly winds characterize the primary mode of atmospheric variability in the southern hemisphere during all seasons. This is true not only in observations, but also in an unforced 15,000 yr integration of a coarse resolution (R15) coupled ocean-atmosphere model. Here we document how this mode of atmospheric variability, known as the Southern ...

The velocity field and the instability of the flow in a rotating square duct were investigated. The velocity profiles were obtained for Ekman numbers less than 1/16 by combining a linear Stewartson layer solution, a non-linear Ekman layer solution and a local similarity assumption. The transition of the secondary-flow pattern from one pair of vortices to two pairs of vortices was studied with t...

JANUARY 2004 AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY | T he idea that the southern winds might be important to the rate of the deep water formation in the North Atlantic was first put forward by Toggweiler and Samuels (1995). They analyzed the results of a global circulation model (GCM) and showed that the rate of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) formation increased when the strength of the southern wi...

Facial expressions are a key index of emotion. They have consistent correlation with self-reported emotion (Keltner, 1995; Rosenberg & Ekman, 1994; Ekman & Rosenberg, in press) and emotion-related central and peripheral physiology (Davidson, Ekman, Saron, Senulis, & Friesen, 1990; Fox & Davidson, 1988; Levenson, Ekman, & Friesen, 1990). They putatively share similar underlying dimensions with s...

We compared the NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center’s Environmental Research Division (formerly Pacific Fisheries Environmental Laboratory: PFEL) coastal upwelling indices along the northern Baja California coast with those derived from winds measured by coastal meteorological stations and estimated by the QuikSCAT satellite. With the exception of the PFEL series at 33 ̊N, the three data set...

We present experimental heat transport measurements of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection with rotation about a vertical axis. The fluid, water with a Prandtl number (sigma) of about 6, was confined in a cell with a square cross section of 7.3 x 7.3 cm2 and a height of 9.4 cm. Heat transport was measured for Rayleigh numbers 2 x 10(5)<Ra<5 x 10(8) and Taylor numbers 0<Ta<5 x 10(9). We show th...
