Objective: Eagle’s Syndrome is caused by elongation of the styloid process or ossification of the stylohyoid ligament. We aimed to evaluate the contribution of 3-Dimensional Multidetector CT findings on Eagle’s syndrome. Methodology: Three-Dimensional Multidetector CT were performed on 13 patients with Eagle’s syndrome. Maximum intensity projection (MIP) and volume rendering (VR) images having ...
This work aimed to evaluate the occurrence of suggestive images of styloid process elongation in panoramic radiographs, noting their frequency according to sex, age, and location, as well as measure and classify the types and patterns of calcification of elongated styloid processes. 2,500 panoramic radiographs were evaluated in a Radiology Clinic in Recife, PE, Brazil, performed between 2008 an...
Elongation of the styloid process is a rare condition. Only 4% of patients have clinical symptoms where elongated styloid process (ESP) occasionally irritates or disrupts adjacent anatomical structures, which is called Eagle syndrome. This present report was aimed at reporting an asymptomatic ESP with unusual width and length.
INTRODUCTION Eagle's syndrome is defined as elongation of the styloid process or the stylohyoid ligament mineralization complex which consist of styloid process, stylohyoid ligament and lesser horn of hyoid bone. It is a rare entity, is not commonly suspected in clinical practice. It is characterized by recurrent facial and throat pain, dysphagia, odynophagia, parapharingeal foreign body sensat...
BACKGROUND Many nerve injuries have been associated with Eagle syndrome. The cranial nerves V, VII, IX, and X have been reported to be injured by the elongated styloid process in this syndrome. METHODS We describe a case of Eagle syndrome with atypical symptoms of hypoglossal nerve palsy and Horner syndrome. RESULTS A 56-year-old woman presented with right hypoglossal nerve palsy, right Hor...
Eagle syndrome (ES) is a symptom complex including recurrent neck and throat pain, foreign body sensation in the throat and dysphagia as a result of the elongation of the styloid process or the mineralization of the stylohyoid ligament complex. The symptoms of ES may worsen with lateral rotation of the head and it may less commonly present with tinnitus, weakness on the tongue, altered speech, ...
The aim of this study was to evaluate the mean radiographic length of styloid process in a sample of Croatian population, and based on biological basis, to suggest a classification applicable in clinical practice. Two hundred and ninety six panoramic x-rays were examined, out of which 161 from males and 135 from females. The length of the styloid process was measured and age analysis was conduc...
