Clonal emergence of group A streptococci (GAS) with reduced susceptibility to fluoroquinolones (FQs) has been increasingly reported. Non-susceptibility is associated with various point mutations in the target-encoding genes and has only been described in a few emm types. We used a well-characterised GAS clinical paediatric collection from Brussels (Belgium) and Brasília (Brazil) to analyse the ...

This report discusses the following issues related to typing of group A streptococci (GAS): The development and use of the 5' emm variable region sequencing (emm typing) in relation to the existing serologic typing system; the designation of emm types in relation to M types; a system for validation of new emm types; criteria for validation of provisional M types to new M-types; a list of refere...

The e-learning maturity model (eMM) provides institutions with detailed information on their e-learning activities. This paper describes the pilot application of the eMM to two large Australian universities and suggests that disciplinary differences taking place in different spaces may be more consistent in their use of e-learning than is generally acknowledged. The eMM is also compared with th...

We present here the complete genome sequence of Streptococcus pyogenes type emm111 strain GUR, a throat isolate from a scarlet fever patient, which has been used to treat cancer patients in the former Soviet Union. We also present the complete genome sequence of its derivative strain GURSA1 with an inactivated emm gene.

BACKGROUND Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) are responsible for a significant disease burden amongst Māori and Pacific populations in New Zealand (NZ). However, contemporary data are lacking regarding circulating group A Streptococcal (GAS) strains in NZ. Such information is important in guiding vaccine development. METHODS GAS isolates from April to June 2015 wer...

Educational Multimedia (EMM) is becoming a mature and integral part of teaching and learning systems, mainly due to its ability improve teaching and learning. However, EMM selection and evaluation for higher education is a complex and interdisciplinary problem characterised by uncertainty, dynamics, explicit and implicit knowledge and constraints, and involvement of different stakeholders. In t...

We present two cases of invasive infection caused by Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis, one that showed rapidly developing necrotizing fasciitis in a previously healthy man and one that showed severe cellulitis and septic shock even though the bacterium possessed a mutated emm gene, predicted to encode a truncated M protein.

Exceptional Model Mining (EMM) generalizes the wellknown data mining task of Subgroup Discovery (SD). Given a model class of interest, the goal of EMM is to find subgroups of the data for which a model fitted to the subgroup deviates substantially from the global model. In both SD and EMM, heuristic search is often employed to circumvent the problem that exhaustive search of the subgroup descri...

Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis (groups C and G streptococci [GCS/GGS]) is an increasingly recognized human pathogen, although it may follow indirect pathways. Prospective surveillance of selected households in 3 remote Aboriginal communities in Australia provided 337 GCS/GGS isolates that were emm sequence-typed. Lancefield group C isolates (GCS) were localized to specific househ...
