Background & Aims: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the chronic autoimmune diseases of the central nervous system with unknown etiology. The present study aimed to investigate the apoptosis and nitric oxide (NO) production of endothelial cells treated with serum of patients with MS and response to interferon beta (IFN- ) therapy. Methods: Human umbilical vein endothelial cells were treated wit...

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) strains were investigated to identify those with altered tropism for endothelial cells. In viral replication kinetics analysis, HCMV strain Toledo replicated poorly in aortic endothelial cells (AECs), and the virus count was reduced by 2-3 log units, in comparison with strain AD169. Virus entry at the cell surface for each strain was equivalent. However, immunofluor...

Purpose : The aim of this study is to compare the results of two series of penetrating keratoplasties, e.sch with a different method of conservation. Methods : The corneas of sixteen donors were conserved one of each pair at 4OC and the other at 31%. The average duration of conservation was 3.2 days at 4°C and 13.4 days at 31°C. Average endothelial cell density evaluated with trypan blue was 34...

BACKGROUND Phakic intraocular lens (PIOL) implantation has been used to correct myopia and myopic astigmatism, although corneal decompensation can occur after implantation. Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) has gained in popularity due to its lower postoperative astigmatism and endothelial loss. Herein, we report the use of FLACS in patients who previously received PIOL implan...

Impaired endothelium-dependent relaxation of blood vessels is a common feature in diabetes but the exact underlying mechanisms have not yet been clarified. In the present study, endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation of aortic rings were evaluated in vitro in streptozocin-induced diabetic and age-matched control rats. Moreover, NO synthase activity of aortic endothelial cells was asse...

The endothelial cell count was studied in 275 normal eyes. It showed a gradual decline to the age of 50 but no appreciable difference thereafter. Review of earlier reports of progressive reduction throughout life indicates that a different interpretation is likely, which conforms with the results of this and other recent studies. The value of detailed endothelial studies is discussed briefly.
