BACKGROUND Most enterovirus surveillance studies lack detailed clinical data, which limits their clinical usefulness. This study aimed to describe the clinical spectrum and outcome of severe enterovirus infections in children, and to determine whether there are associations between causative enterovirus genotypes and clinical phenotypes. METHODS Retrospective analysis of microbiological and c...

PURPOSE Nephrotic syndrome is a common chronic illness encountered during childhood. Infections have been identified as a cause of nephrotic syndrome. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between enteroviral infection and nephrotic syndrome. METHODS A nationwide retrospective cohort study was conducted by analyzing data from the National Health Insurance Research Database in ...

Karita Sadeharju: Maternal and childhood enterovirus infections and the risk of beta-cell autoimmunity Type 1 diabetes is a chronic disease, which is caused by the destruction of insulin producing pancreatic beta-cells. Beta-cells are destroyed by immune mediated mechanisms and the disease is classified as an autoimmune disease. The pathogenesis of the disease is multifactorial. Genetic suscept...

Enteroviruses are non-enveloped viruses of Enterovirus genus, Picornaviridae family, causing a variety human diseases: from acute respiratory and intestinal infections to more severe pathologies including poliomyelitis, encephalitis, myocarditis, pancreatitis. Currently, no approved direct-acting antiviral drugs for treatment enterovirus exists, whereas vaccination is available only prevention ...

Previous studies have suggested that enterovirus infections during pregnancy may increase the risk of type 1 diabetes in the offspring. Our aim was to evaluate the role of first trimester enterovirus infections in a larger cohort of pregnant women. Two series of pregnant women were analyzed as follows: 948 women (series 1) and 680 women (series 2) whose child developed clinical diabetes before ...

The clinical impact of enteroviruses associated with hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is unknown outside Asia, and the prevalence of enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) in particular might be underestimated. To investigate the prevalence of enterovirus serotypes and the clinical presentations associated with HFMD in France, we conducted prospective ambulatory clinic-based surveillance of children durin...

Echovirus 24 belongs to human enterovirus B species in the family Picornaviridae. Here, we report the whole-genome sequences of a novel complete genome sequence of a recombinant (echovirus 24) Echo 24 strain, PZ18/JS/2012, which was isolated from a patient with hand-foot-and-mouth disease in China.

We report the full genome sequence of an isolate of bovine enterovirus type B from China. The virus (BEV-BJ001) was isolated from Beijing, China, from fecal swabs of cattle suffering from severe diarrhea. This genome sequence will give useful insight for future molecular epidemiological studies in China.

BACKGROUND Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) resulted in a reported increase in the number of children needing hospital or critical care admission because of respiratory insufficiency during 2014. It remains unclear, however, whether EV-D68 infections were more severe than rhinovirus or non-EV-D68 enterovirus infections. METHODS We evaluated consecutive children presenting to a pediatric hospital betw...
