Water is an effective promoter of the endo-selective opening of trisubstituted epoxides, enabling related cascades leading to a variety of substituted ladder polyether structures. When used in conjunction with a tetrahydropyran-templated nucleophile, water can overcome the powerful electronic directing effect of a methyl substituent at either site of the epoxide, making water a uniquely versati...
Graphene oxide potentially has multiple applications. The chemistry of graphene oxide and its response to external stimuli such as temperature and light are not well understood and only approximately controlled. This understanding is crucial to enable future applications of this material. Here, a combined experimental and density functional theory study shows that multilayer graphene oxide prod...
Synthetic studies on the antibiotic natural product ripostatin A have been carried out with the aim to construct the C9-C10 bond by a nickel(0)-catalyzed coupling reaction of an enyne and an epoxide, followed by rearrangement of the resulting dienylcyclopropane intermediate to afford the skipped 1,4,7-triene. A cyclopropyl enyne fragment corresponding to C1-C9 has been synthesized in high yield...
New 5-lipoxygenase inhibitors, designated epocarbazolins A and B, were isolated from the culture broth of Streptomyces anulatus T688-8. These compounds showed potent rat 5-lipoxygenase inhibitory activity with weak antibacterial activity. Structural studies revealed that epocarbazolins are new carbazole antibiotics having a novel substitution pattern and an epoxide in the side chain.
The asymmetric unit of the crystal structure of the title compound, C(16)H(12)N(2)O(2), contains two independent mol-ecules. In each mol-ecule, the two aromatic rings adopt a cis configuration about the central epoxide ring, and are oriented at dihedral angles of 61.5 (5) and 74.4 (5)°with respect to the epoxide ring in one mol-ecule, and 60.1 (5) and 72.1 (5)° in the other one. Inter-molecular...
We found that elemental iodine and bromine are converted to trihalide nucleophiles (triiodine and tribromide anion, respectively) in the presence of catalytic amounts of meso-tetraphenylporphyrins (H2TPP). Therefore a highly regioselective method for the synthesis of beta-haloalcohols through direct ring opening of epoxides with elemental iodine and bromine in the presence of H2TPPs as new cata...
In search for new natural products, which may lead to the development of new drugs for all kind of applications, novel methods are needed. Here we describe the identification of electrophilic natural products in crude extracts via their reactivity against azide as a nucleophile followed by their subsequent enrichment using a cleavable azide-reactive resin (CARR). Using this approach, natural pr...

Denzimol, a new anticonvulsant drug, is currently undergoing clinical evaluation. In this paper we report its use in six patients who were also taking carbamazepine and two patients taking phenytoin. There was a striking elevation of serum carbamazepine, carbamazepine-10, 11 epoxide and phenytoin concentrations in all patients on the addition of denzimol therapy. The interaction with carbamazep...
