This paper describes the overnight Giemsa staining method for detecting mycoplasma infection of cell cultures. This simple method requires no special equipment and has practical application in most cell culture laboratories. This technique has been used conveniently to monitor stock cell cultures for mycoplasma infection over a 12-month period avoiding any contamination.

BACKGROUND Little is known about the extent of human isocyanate skin exposure in auto body shops and the effectiveness of personal protective equipment. Animal studies have suggested that skin exposure to isocyanates may be an important risk factor for respiratory sensitization leading to asthma. This study provides initial data on hexamethylene diisocyanate skin exposure in three auto body sho...

In the event of a radiation emergency, people close to the site of the incident may be exposed to radiation by external exposure, or as a result of intakes of radioactive material. For these incidents it may be necessary to monitor members of the public both for external and internal contamination. This work reviews currently available equipment for the assessment of internal exposure following...

We read with interest the article by BURGOS et al. [1], which is a welcome addition to the literature on the potential problems of cross-infection of patients from respiratory testing equipment. Although few water-sealed spirometers are now used in the UK, the data provide valuable information on the potential types of microorganisms encountered during testing in patients without clinically app...

There are many standards and recommendations for breathing air quality associated with respiratory protection equipment, but little has been done regarding the possible microbial contamination of medical air. The present study demonstrates quantitatively and qualitatively that pipelines might be incriminated as source of microbial contamination of compressed and synthetic air for medical use. A...
