Carter [1] identifies putative conceptual and methodological flaws in a paper from our laboratory on the effects of the social environment on exploration– avoidance behaviour in a cichlid fish [2]. Although we welcome discussion of methodological issues that fosters the use of more solid experimental designs in personality research and we acknowledge that the experimental design used can be fur...

The activation of conceptual metaphors has always been studied one mapping at a time. What happens when various conceptual metaphors are processed at the same time is still unknown. The experimental design used here enabled the activation of three conceptual metaphors at the same time (past-left/future-right, negative-left/positive-right and negativepast/positive-future). Participants had to ma...

Recent results in experimental and personnel economics indicate that women do not like competitive environments as much as men. This article presents an experimental design which gives participants the opportunity to enter a tournament as part of a team rather than alone. While a large and significant gender gap in entry in the individual tournament is found in line with the literature, no gend...

Some branches of phonetics prefer experiments that feature a large number of repetitions and only few unique items. This paper discusses this relatively common experiment design choice, arguing that repetitions do not always help for drawing sound conclusions from phonetic data. It is recommended that phonetic experiments should be designed with less repetitions and more distinct items.

In this paper, a simulation study is carried out to identify potential improvements in the management of a nonautomated distribution warehouse which is located between manufacturers and small retailers. The simulation model has been used to obtain valuable knowledge of the operational characteristics of the warehouse. We aim at understanding the effect of an automatic storage upon the occupied ...

Size is a significant variable in cost/estimation modelling and is widely regarded as one of the most important determinants of effort. The research documented here was carried out in response to problems associated with estimation in project management. This paper discusses some empirical evidence arising from a study of design size estimation. The approach used here is to count the number of ...

T he nature and effects of heat have intrigued philosophers and scientists since ancient times. Different theo['ies were deve loped to exp lain the phenomena, and of these, the wave theory and the ca loric theory were the ones that reillained in force until the second half of the nineteenth century when overwhelming evidence led to the conclusion that heat was not a material substance, that the...

Structured imagination refers to reliance upon prior knowledge when generating novel examples of a provided category. Yet studies supporting this tenet use experimental designs where the stimuli themselves cue exemplars based on culturally relevant items. The present study combined exemplar generation with abstract stimuli as a means of attenuating instructional bias. Participants were shown a ...
