Flavonoid composition during the ontogenetic cycle was examined in Pyracantha coccinea. The flavonoid profiles of plants at different ages showed marked differences in aerial and hypogeal parts. In the vegetative phase there are flavonoids (flavanones, flavones, and flavonols) only in the aerial parts and they appear gradually during the plant life. These secondary metabolites are detectable in...

Notholaena fendleri, Polypodiaceae, Farinose Exudate, Novel Flavanone Notholaena fendleri is a rare representative of the genus, growing mainly in Colorado/USA. The white farinose exudate on the lower surface of its pinnules is composed partly of waxy material and partly of flavonoid aglycones. The flavonoid moiety consists mainly of methyl derivatives of the flavanones naringenin and eriodicty...

Among two flavanones [YS01, YS02] and eight prenylflavanones [YS03-YS10], preliminary screening with fifteen test bacterial strains showed that YS06 was the most active agent. YS06 exhibited highly significant antimicrobial action when tested against 228 bacterial strains comprising two Gram-positive and six Gram-negative genera. The in vitro susceptibility test was carried out by determining t...

A four-step flavanone biosynthetic pathway was constructed and introduced into Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The recombinant yeast strain was fed with phenylpropanoid acids and produced the flavanones naringenin and pinocembrin 62 and 22 times more efficiently compared to previously reported recombinant prokaryotic strains. Microbial biosynthesis of the flavanone eriodictyol was also achieved.

Flavonoids and related structures (e.g., flavones, isoflavones, flavanones, catechins) exert various biological effects, including anticarcinogenic, antioxidant and (anti-)estrogenic effects, and modulation of sex hormone homeostasis. A key enzyme in the synthesis of estrogens from androgens is aromatase (cytochrome P450 19; CYP19). We investigated the effects of various natural and synthetic f...

Antioxidant properties of substrates [flavanone (1), 6-hydroxy- (2), 7-hydroxy- (3), 5,7,4'-trihydroxy- (5), and 7-methoxyflavanone (4)] and products of their microbial transformations, comprising hydroxylation, O-methylation, stereospecific reduction, dehydrogenation, and C-ring cleavage of the benzo-gamma-pyrone system, were determined. Measurements of the antiradical activity (expressed as I...
