The increasing penetration of renewable generation increases the need for flexibility to accommodate for growing uncertainties. The level of flexibility is measured by the available power that can be provided by flexible resources, such as dispatachable generators, in a certain time period under the constraint of transmission capacity. In addition to conventional flexible resources, energy stor...
We consider the capacity portfolio investment problem with flexible machines facing multiple products and demand uncertainty. For the problem of maximizing the service level, we approximate the objective with the largest inscribing sphere and provide a linear program formulation. We show, under certain conditions, that the optimal flexibility configuration consists only of dedicated machines an...
This paper studies the impact of competition on a firm’s choice of technology (product-flexible or product-dedicated) and capacity investment decisions. Specifically, we model two firms competing with each other in two markets characterized by price-dependent and uncertain demand. The firms make three decisions in the following sequence: choice of technology (technology game), capacity investme...
A transition from an oil and coal based energy system to a systems based on renewable and sustainable energy sources has begun in many countries throughout the developed world. As a pioneer, Denmark currently has a wind energy penetration of 30% in the electricity sector and an end goal of 100% renewables in all energy sectors by 2050. The main elements in this transition are an increase in the...
Consider a mass customizer who produces multiple variants of a product in make-to-order fashion, and who also produces some standard variants as make-to-stock. We evaluate pricing and production issues from a joint marketing and operations perspective. Marketing determines prices while operations chooses between three production strategies as it sets capacity. A key result is that under the log...
This paper presents, formalises and classifies working time accounts (WTAs), a means of achieving flexible production capacity through the flexible organisation of working time. We propose linear programming models to plan working time, using WTA, at companies in the service industry. A computational experiment shows that the models can be solved for any planning problems of reasonable size.
A flexible metal-organic framework selectively sorbs para- (pX) over meta-xylene (mX) by synergic restructuring around pX coupled with generation of unused void space upon mX loading. The nature of the structural change suggests more generally that flexible structures which are initially mismatched in terms of fit and capacity to the preferred guest are strong candidates for effective molecular...
This paper investigates the most favorable conditions for a full defragmentation procedure when evolving from a fixed to a flexible-grid scenario. Results show that migrating legacy channels to flexible-grid formats can yield up to 50% more capacity for future traffic, provided these legacy channels are also spectrally re-planned.
In this study, we examined gender differences in: (1) a flexible remembering task, that asked for episodic memory decisions at an item-specific versus category-based level, and (2) the retrieval specificity of autobiographical memory during free recall. Differences favouring women were found on both measures. Furthermore, a significant association was observed, across gender groups, between lev...
