We study the relation between size and star formation activity in a complete sample of 225 massive (M∗ > 5 · 10 M⊙) galaxies at 1.5 < z < 2.5, selected from the FIREWORKS UV-IR catalog of the CDFS. Based on stellar population synthesis model fits to the observed restframe UV-NIR SEDs, and independent MIPS 24μm observations, 65% of galaxies are actively forming stars, while 35% are quiescent. Us...

We present deep, high angular-resolution HST/NICMOS imaging in the Hubble Deep Field South (HDF-S), focusing on a subset of 14 Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs) at z ∼ 2.5 galaxies that have been pre-selected to have J −K > 2.3. We find a clear trend between the rest-frame optical sizes of these sources and their luminosity-weighted stellar ages as inferred from their broad-band spectral energy distr...

Recent spectroscopic and morphological observational studies of galaxies around NGC 1399 in the Fornax Cluster (Drinkwater et al. 2000b) have discovered several ‘ultra-compact dwarf’ galaxies with intrinsic sizes of ∼ 100 pc and absolute B band magnitudes ranging from −13 to −11 mag. In order to elucidate the origin of these enigmatic objects, we perform numerical simulations on the dynamical e...

Two-dimensional surface photometry has been done for 166 early-type galaxies (bulge/total luminosity B/T > 0.6) in 3 fields of the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology (CNOC) cluster survey. These galaxies are either spectroscopically confirmed members of clusters at z = 0.23 (45 galaxies), 0.43 (22), and 0.55 (16) or field galaxies in the same redshift range. An additional 51 early-typ...

We present a study of the nature of the blue early-type galaxies (BEGs) in the GOODS north and south fields using the GOODS HST/ACS archival data. Using visual inspection, we have selected 58 BEGs and 113 normal red early-type galaxies (REGs) in the sample of 1,949 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts. We find that the BEGs are generally bluer, fainter, and less-massive than the REGs, although...

A substantial fraction of barred galaxies host additional nuclear bars which tumble with pattern speeds exceeding those of the large-scale (primary) stellar bars. We have investigated the mechanism of formation and dynamical decoupling in such nested bars which include gaseous (secondary) nuclear bars within the full size galactic disks, hosting a double inner Lindblad resonance. Becoming incre...

I quantify the effects of 11 variables on the catchability of pelagic longlines, which are used to catch tunas and billfishes in the open ocean. Extension of the depth range and the duration of longline operations have reduced the catchability of several epipelagic species, such as mako sharks (Isurus spp.), since industrial longlining commenced in the tropical Pacific Ocean in the early 1950s....

The size-luminosity relation of early-type Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs), Re ∝ L , is steeper than that for the bulk of the early-type galaxy population, for which Re ∝ L . This is true if quantities derived from either deVaucouleur or Sersic fits to the surface brightness profiles are used. Contamination from an intra-cluster light component centered on the BCG, with similar parameters to ...

We compare colors and luminosities of “galaxies” formed in a simulation of cosmological reionization with real ones. While the simulation suffers severely from a limitation of a small box size, simulated galaxies do appear as smaller cousins of the observed ones. They have similar colors and trace the same luminosity function as the real galaxies. They are also faring well in their abilities to...

I outline a quantitative method for characterizing galaxies both by photometric ‘form’ and indices of spectral-type, applicable to both nearby and distant galaxies. Such a characterization provides insight on galaxy evolution because there are physical connections between galaxies’ stellar populations and their light distribution. “Normal” galaxies’ form-parameters (surface-brightness, image co...
