In order to study the importance of surface phonons on the electron-phonon relaxation in plasmonic nanoparticles, the effect of size, shape, and materials have recently been studied. Gold and silver nanoparticles have shown no dependence on size and shape while copper nanoparticles have shown some size dependence. This suggests that the bulk phonons, which are sensitive to the bulk-phase struct...

The frequency selective surface (FSS) is a periodic structure with filtering performance for optical and microwave signals. The general periodic arrays made with patterned metallic elements can act as an aperture or patch on a substrate. In this work, two kinds of materials were used to produce unit cells with various patterns. Gold nanoparticles of 25 nm diameter were used to form periodic mon...

The interaction of nanoparticles with hemoglobin (Hb), a major constituent of red blood cells, is important in nanotoxicity research. We report SERS spectra of Hb using gold and silver nanoparticles at very small nanoparticle : Hb molecule ratios, that is, under conditions relevant for SERS-based nanotoxicity experiments with red blood cells at high sensitivity. We show that the structural info...

Tetanus is caused by the toxin secreted by Clostridium tetani. Due to the rapid infection with this bacterium, it is so important to investigate the tetanus immunity of people. Therefore, electrochemical biosensors, as one of the most effective tools in this regard, have demanded characteristics such as being fast, simple, cost-effective and portable. However, their detection sensitivity is not...

A detailed, methodical approach was used to synthesise silver and gold nanoparticles using two differently prepared aqueous extracts of the brown algae Sargassum incisifolium. The efficiency of the extracts in producing nanoparticles were compared to commercially available brown algal fucoidans, a major constituent of brown algal aqueous extracts. The nanoparticles were characterised using TEM,...

In this study, the corrosion resistance of Ag-Au-Cu-Pd system alloys consisting of 5 or 10 mass% indium was evaluated. Levels of element release and tarnish were determined and electrochemical measurements performed. Results were compared with those for commercial silver-palladium-gold alloy. In terms of electrochemical behavior, the transpassive potential of these experimental alloys was 168-2...

Following a 6-h inhalation exposure to aerosolized 20 and 110 nm diameter silver nanoparticles, lung tissues from rats were investigated with X-ray absorption spectroscopy, which can identify the chemical state of silver species. Lung tissues were processed immediately after sacrifice of the animals at 0, 1, 3, and 7 days post exposure and the samples were stored in an inert and low-temperature...

We developed a simple, non-enzymatic approach for the colorimetric detection of glucose based on a gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) assisted silver mirror reaction (AuSMR). The linear range of the concentration of glucose is from 0.04 mM to 1 mM, and the lowest concentration that can be distinguished by the naked eye is 10 nM. This approach has been successfully used for detecting glucose in serum.

A novel impedance-based thermoplastic flow-through immunosensor is presented which integrates a porous polymer monolith capture element with an interdigitated electrode array (IDA). The technique employs a volumetric impedance sensing zone and a direct assay with secondary antibody labeled gold nanoparticles (Ab-AuNP). The captured gold nanoparticles are silver enhanced causing an impedance dro...
