Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection can be responsible for chronic hepatitis in immunocompromised patients, and can rapidly evolve into fibrosis and/or hepatic cirrhosis. We present two cases of chronic hepatitis E, emphasizing the need to be aware of this entity as a growing etiology of hepatitis in transplant and immunocompromised patients.
First indications of hepatitis E as a distinct disease, which differs from hepatitis A, were found in 1980 when sensitive and specific detection systems for hepatitis A virus (HAV) first became available and hepatitis epidemics were examined in India. Epidemiologic studies up to that time pointed to the fact that these hepatitis infections with clinically very similar course were caused by HAV ...
We screened 1,200 living heart, lung, liver, and kidney transplant recipients for hepatitis E virus infection by reverse transcription PCR. In 12 (1%) patients, hepatitis E virus infection was identified; in 11 patients, chronic infection developed. This immunocompromised population is at risk for hepatitis E virus infection.
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is largely responsible for water borne epidemics in many developing countries. The principle mode of HEV transmission is the fecal oral route in epidemic and sporadic forms with a high case fatality ratio in pregnant women. Serum samples from 50 healthy subjects and from 435 acute viral hepatitis patients, 4-75 years old, were screened for markers of acute viral hepatiti...
although its mechanism of action against HCV and HEV is uncertain. Data are limited on the use of ribavirin in patients with chronic hepatitis E and hematologic malignancies (10). The outcome for our patient suggests that ribavirin might be useful for treating hepatitis E in such patients. In conclusion, all patients with hepatitis of unknown origin should be tested for HEV, in particular, immu...
AIM Hepatitis E virus is an etiological agent of hepatitis which is transmitted enterically and may lead to water-born outbreaks. Although it is mainly transmitted by the fecal-oral route, it is estimated that many cases are associated with zoonotic transmission in developing countries. In this study, we aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of hepatitis E in the childhood age group in the pr...
Viral hepatitis includes five distinct disease entities, which are caused by at least five different viruses. Hepatitis A and hepatitis B (infectious and serum hepatitis, respectively) are considered separate diseases and both can be diagnosed by a specific serologic test. Hepatitis C and E comprise a third category, each a distinct type, with Hepatitis C parenterally transmitted, and hepatitis...
Background: Hepatitis B virus infection is a worldwide health problem. Vertical transmission is a route of Hepatitis B virus infection that is regarded as a considerable factor in Hepatitis B virus prevention program all over the world. Objective: This study was conducted to screen the hepatitis B surface antigen, hepatitis B surface antibody and hepatitis B e antigen in pregnant women. Methods...
