Although prosthesis-bone micromotion is known to influence the stability of total hip replacement, no protocol exists to investigate resurfacing hip implants. An in-vitro protocol was developed to measure prosthesis-bone micromotions of resurfaced femurs. In order to assess the effect of all loading directions, the protocol included a variety of in-vitro loading scenarios covering the range of ...
With an increasing number of primary hip replacements being performed every year, the burden of revision hip arthroplasty, for septic and aseptic loosening, recurrent dislocation or periprosthetic fracture, is also increasing. In recent years, different approaches to revising the femoral prosthesis have emerged; including both cemented and cementless techniques. With a stable cement mantle and ...
The Ganz periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is currently the most popular hip-sparing procedure in adults with acetabular dysplasia. If this procedure fails and a total hip arthroplasty is necessary, spatial reorientation of the acetabulum alters the conditions of implanting the acetabular component of the prosthesis. In our study, we present two cases of total hip arthroplasty in patients who had ...
We report 2 cases of hip dislocation after a total hip arthroplasty, which could not be successfully reduced by closed method. Post-manipulation radiographs revealed proximal migration of the prosthesis in both cases, which required open reduction. The pathogenesis and treatment of this hip dislocation is discussed.
BACKGROUND Cementless hip prosthesis was designed to provide biologic fixation, without the use of cement. The second generation components have shown more reliable bone ingrowths and survival rates. We are reporting a midterm result of two designs of cementless prosthesis in a unique culture with different social habits and expectations. METHODS 52 primary cementless total hip arthroplasty i...
A 75-year-old male had failed to respond conservative therapy for erectile dysfunction and had undergone insertion of a malleable penile prosthesis in 1995. Twenty years after the initial implant he presented with right-sided prosthesis localized in the buttock. There was no infection. The prosthesis was extracted through an incision in the right hip. As in the recent case, mechanical failures ...
An increasing number of patients with hip fracture have been seen with osteoporosis associated with osteoarthritis. Although knee dislocation is related to high-energy trauma, low-grade injuries can also lead to knee dislocation which is defined as "ultra-low velocity dislocation." The case reported here is of an 82-year-old patient who presented with a left intertrochanteric hip fracture. Part...
INTRODUCTION Neglected hip dislocation is rare in today's world and after prosthesis replacement even rarer finding. However such patients may not report to surgeons until they develop secondary complications. Management of such patient's is a challenge to the treating surgeon and need to be tailored suiting to patient's demands, expectations and constraints of financial resources. We did not f...
BACKGROUND Hip replacement surgery is a popular procedure that provides predictable, long-lasting and good effects. The use of short stem prostheses helps preserve an intact medullary cavity and proximal diaphysis. It has been demonstrated that the use of short stem prostheses leads to better clinical results compared to standard stem prostheses. The study aimed to assess the migration of the s...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The most common surgical approaches in total hip arthroplasty in Sweden are the posterior and the anterolateral transgluteal approach. Currently, however, there is insufficient evidence to prefer one over the other regarding risk of subsequent surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS We searched the Swedish Hip Arthroplasty Register between the years 1992 and 2009 to compare the p...
