Metallic ferromagnetism is in general an intermediate to strong coupling phenomenon. Since there do not exist systematic analytic methods to investigate such types of problems, the microscopic origin of metallic ferromagnetism is still not sufficiently understood. However, during the last two or three years remarkable progress was made in this field: It is now certain that even in the one-band ...

Making use of symmetry properties and known exact results for the Hubbard Model on bipartite lattice, we show that (1) there is no phase separation for repulsive coupling at low dopings, (2) phase separation and superconductivity co-exist in the ground states for attractive coupling in a range of filling fractions.

Correlation effects are important for making predictions in the d phase of Pu. Using a realistic treatment of the intra-atomic Coulomb correlations we address the long-standing problem of computing ground state properties. The equilibrium volume is obtained in good agreement with experiment when taking into account Hubbard U of the order 4 eV. For this U, the calculation predicts a 5f5 atomicli...

It is becoming widely recognized that, contrary to earlier expectations, the usual one-band Hubbard model does not give an explanation for itinerant ferromagnetism. After reviewing the status of magnetic ordering in the one-band model, we discuss the possibility of ferromagnetism in some recently introduced two-band Hubbard models, and in generalized Ander-son lattices. It is argued that these ...

We investigate the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate held in an optical lattice under the influence of a strong periodic driving potential. Studying the mean-field version of the Bose-Hubbard model reveals that the condensate becomes dynamically unstable when the effective intersite tunneling becomes negative. We further show how controlling the sign of the tunneling can be used to manage ...

Systems of coupled photonic cavities have been predicted to exhibit quantum phase transitions by analogy with the Hubbard model. To this end, we have studied topologies of few up to six photonic cavities each containing a single two-level system. Quantum phase space diagrams are produced for these systems, and compared to mean-field results. We also consider finite effective temperature, and co...

Properties of the ground-state, zero temperature ‘phase diagram’ of the Bose-Hubbard hamiltonian as understood by Fisher et al. [5] are studied using simple tools in the case of finite systems. The results obtained provide a transparent picture of the thermodynamic limit and reveal features reminiscent of shell structure in many-fermion systems. Independent sites and many-site correlations appe...
