The clinical presentation and long term outcome (mean follow up eight years, range 0.25 to 21) of 15 patients with autosomal recessive primary familial hypomagnesaemia is described. The most common (67%) presenting events were generalised hypocalcaemic-hypomagnesaemic seizures at a mean (SD) age of 4.9 (2.5) weeks. Thirteen infants, treated soon after diagnosis with high dose enteral magnesium ...

Magnesium (Mg) modulates vasomotor tone, blood pressure, and peripheral blood flow. Mg deficiency was shown to trigger vasoconstriction and enhance vascular endothelial injury (2). On the other hand, endothelin-1 (ET-1) is a potent vasoconstrictor peptide, produced by vascular endothelial cells (3). We investigated the effects of hypomagnesaemia on mortality and other mortality risk factors in ...

Six children are described in whom deafness followed treatment of full thickness burns with topical antibiotic spray containing neomycin. 3 children developed hypocalcaemic tetany, and were shown to have a metabolic disorder involving hypocalcaemia, hypomagnesaemia, and hypokalaemia. The dangers of treating burns with topical ototoxic and nephrotoxic antibiotics are emphasised.

BACKGROUND Magnesium is a cation that is constantly being rediscovered. A number of studies have linked low magnesium levels to poor outcome of critically ill patients. Despite this hypomagnesemia continues to be under-recognized and uncorrected. There are no studies, in our knowledge, that have assessed the impact of correction of hypomagnesaemia on the outcome of the ICU patient. AIMS AND O...
