kcnk2 was previously shown to regulate immune-cell trafficking into the central nervous system (cns). kcnk2-/- mice demonstrated a more severe disease course in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, an animal model of multiple sclerosis, due to an increased immune-cell migration into the cns. an upregulation of the cellular adhesion molecules icam1 and vcam1 on brain endothelial cells in k...

We discuss FCNC top quark production via anomalous tqV couplings at the Tevatron and HERA colliders. We calculate higher-order soft-gluon corrections to such processes and demonstrate the stabilization of the cross section when these corrections are included. Presented at the DIS 2004 Workshop, Strbske Pleso, Slovakia, 14-18 April, 2004.

The parasitic worm Fasciola hepatica induces strong Th2 and T-regulatory immune responses while simultaneously suppressing Th1-driven immune responses to bystander microbial infections. It also prevents the initiation of Th1-mediated autoimmune disorders in mice through the suppression of Th17 and Th1 immune responses, and this can be mimicked by parasite-derived molecules. We have isolated F. ...

While the role of cytokines in causing pro- and anti-inflammatory cascades in the brain and that of chemokines in promoting chemotaxis is well recognized, the immunomodulatory actions of neurotrophins released during brain injury remains largely undetermined. This knowledge gap affects basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF2), which in the brain is mainly produced by astrocytes and characteristica...

Neutrophils contribute to demyelinating autoimmune diseases, yet their phenotype and functions have been elusive to date. Here, we demonstrate that ICAM1 surface expression distinguishes extra- from intravascular neutrophils in the mouse CNS during experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Transcriptomic analysis of these 2 subpopulations indicated that neutrophils, once extravasated, ac...

INTRODUCTION Myocardial infarction is caused by the obstruction of an artery in places of atherosclerosis plaque rupture. Endothelial cells during their activation express chemoattractant and adhesion molecules whereas infiltrating inflammatory cells produce enzymes, predisposing a lesion to rupture. MATERIAL AND METHODS We investigated the correlation between polymorphisms in the human genes...

Amniotic membrane proved to be very effective tool in the treatment of a number of ocular surface diseases. The amniotic membrane, however, has to be stored before its transplantation onto the ocular surface followed by mandatory serologic control in order to exclude the transmission of certain viruses. Therefore it is most important to study if cryopreservation of the membrane affects cell sur...

Meta-analyses of European populations has successfully identified genetic variants in over 100 loci associated with lipid levels, but our knowledge in other ethnicities remains limited. To address this, we performed dense genotyping of ∼2,000 candidate genes in 7,657 African Americans, 1,315 Hispanics and 841 East Asians, using the IBC array, a custom ∼50,000 SNP genotyping array. Meta-analyses...

Increased endothelial cell (EC) permeability and vascular inflammation along with alveolar epithelial damage are key features of acute lung injury (ALI). Products of 1-palmitoyl-2-arachidonoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylcholine oxidation (OxPAPC) showed protective effects against inflammatory signaling and vascular EC barrier dysfunction induced by gram-negative bacterial wall lipopolysaccharide (L...
