a 21-year-old woman presented with a painless growing mass in her right flank since 5 months before. with the probable diagnosis of a cold abscess, the patient was operated, but the wound was not cured. the patient was re-examined and a biopsy from the lesion was taken which revealed hydatid cyst. after nearly complete excision of the infected area and adjuvant chemotherapy with albendazole for...
Epidermal wound healing is a complex process that repairs injured tissue. The complexity of this process increases when bacteria are present in a wound; the bacteria interaction determines whether infection sets in. Because of underlying physiological problems infected wounds do not follow the normal healing pattern. In this paper we present a mathematical model of the healing of both infected ...
A 30-year-old man developed an infected knee wound 2 days after jumping his bicycle into a freshwater dam. He required repeated debridement and tissue grew bright green colonies typical of the alga Chlorella plus Aeromonas hydrophila. This, and one previously reported case, responded to surgical debridement and careful wound management.
SBU Alert is a service provided by SBU in collaboration with the Medical Products Agency, the National Board of Health and Welfare, and the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions Technology and target group Vacuum assisted closure therapy is used for many different types of wounds that require secondary healing (i.e. from the wound floor and edges). Reasons could be that the wound...
Two cases are described of late pseudoaneurysm of the ascending aorta caused by dehiscence of infected aortocoronary vein graft suture lines. Both cases were associated with early postoperative Staphylococcus aureus superficial wound infection. This complication should be suspected in patients developing protracted wound infections after operation, particularly when associated with rigors.
The incidence of wound dehiscence and incisional hernia after two methods of abdominal wound closure (layered closure with retention sutures and single-layer "mass closure") was studied in a randomised prospective clinical trial in a consecutive series of 200 patients. Dehiscence occurred in 1% of patients and herniation in 4-7%; the incidence of these complications was similar with both method...
OBJECTIVES The objective of this study is to introduce modifications in paraspinous muscle flap surgery and compare this new variation's ability to salvage infected hardware with the classic technique. Infected posterior spine wounds are a difficult problem for reconstructive surgeons. As per experience, hardware retention in infected wounds maintains spinal stability, decreases length of stay,...
Angiogenesis is involved in the wound healing process. Increased angiogenesis and blood flow constitute a major mechanism of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT), which has been shown to facilitate the healing of infected wounds. However, the effect on the expression of angiogensis‑related growth factor remains unknown. The goal of the current study was to investigate the angiogenic factor le...
