Expression of CD40 ligand (CD40L) correlated directly with Mycobacterium tuberculosis-stimulated gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from tuberculosis patients and healthy tuberculin reactors. The CD40L agonist increased M. tuberculosis-induced IFN-gamma production by PBMC, and anti-CD40 or anti-CD40L antibodies reduced IFN-gamma production. CD40...

The proportions of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), CD4(+) T cells, and CD8(+) T cells that produce gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) in response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis were markedly reduced in tuberculosis patients, particularly in those with severe disease. Depletion of CD4(+) but not CD8(+) cells prior to stimulation of PBMC with M. tuberculosis abolished IFN-gamma production. Th...

We have examined the mechanisms of activation of macrophages (Møs) induced by i.p. allografted Meth A tumor cells (Meth A-Møs) during the rejection of the cells by C57BL/6 mice. Inducible nitric oxide (NO) synthase (iNOS), interleukin-12 (IL-12), and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma)-inducing factor (IGIF) were transiently expressed in Meth A-Møs during the rejection. The expression was impaired in ...

Cerebrospinal fluid gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) and interleukin-10 levels in 39 patients with tuberculous meningitis were serially measured. Cytokine levels did not predict intracranial granuloma (IG) development, but IFN-gamma levels in the top quartile after 1 month of therapy were highly associated (odds ratio = 18) with detection of an IG by computed tomography scanning.

Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor enhanced the efficacy of liposomal amphotericin B (LAMB) in a murine model of disseminated infection by Rhizopus oryzae, significantly prolonging survival and reducing tissue burden. The use of gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) alone was ineffective, and IFN-gamma combined with LAMB did not improve the results obtained with LAMB alone.

OBJECTIVE Lysophosphatidylcholine (lysoPC) is abundant in atherosclerotic lesions and has potential immunomodulatory activities. This study is aimed to investigate effects of lysoPC on the interferon (IFN)-gamma-induced gene expression, focusing on T cell-directed CXC chemokines relevant to atherosclerosis. METHODS AND RESULTS Effects of lysoPC on the IFN gamma-induced gene expression of IFN-...

Listeria monocytogenes is widely used as a model to study immune responses against intracellular bacteria. It has been shown that neutrophils and macrophages play an important role to restrict bacterial replication in the early phase of primary infection in mice, and that the cytokines interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) are essential for protection. However...

We have investigated the roles of gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) and interleukin-4 (IL-4) in host defense against Brugia malayi. Our data suggest that the lack of either IFN-gamma or IL-4 prolongs the time required to achieve sterile immunity, suggesting that both canonical type 1 and type 2 responses are involved in the clearance of infection.

The effects of gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) on Chlamydia trachomatis growth in polarized epithelial cells were examined. The range of IFN-gamma concentrations causing aberrant chlamydial growth was wider in polarized than in nonpolarized cultures. Results indicate that chlamydial growth modulation in polarized cells readily leads to persistence and better reflects in vivo conditions.

BACKGROUND Although individuals exposed to cigarette smoke are more susceptible to respiratory infection, the effects of cigarette smoke on lung defense are incompletely understood. Because airway epithelial cell responses to type II interferon (IFN) are critical in regulation of defense against many respiratory viral infections, we hypothesized that cigarette smoke has inhibitory effects on IF...
