Gastric tonometry and intravesical pressure measurement were performed on eight babies born with gastroschisis for 72 hours after abdominal closure. Intravesical pressure was not high. The gastric mucosal pCO2 and gastric mucosal pH remained stable and closely matched arterial values. Tonometry may be a useful technique to monitor these babies.

OBJECTIVES To evaluate oncological outcomes after combination intravesical therapy with gemcitabine (GC) and mitomycin C (MMC) in the setting of recurrent non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) after failure of previous intravesical therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospectively identified patients with recurrent NMIBC after previous intravesical therapy, who refused or were not candida...

Intravesical instillation of BCG or anticancer agents after transurethral resection is currently considered a standard of therapy. However, this approach is basically empirical; none of the anticancer agents used in this setting was specifically formulated for intravesical therapy. Moreover, concern is raised by the kinetic features of water soluble drugs, because of poor transport across the m...

The present study evaluates whether intravesical 5-fluorouridine (FUR), a potent fluorinated pyrimidine, is effective against bladder cancer. The tissue and plasma pharmacokinetics of i.v. and intravesical FUR were studied in dogs to determine the tissue targeting advantage by the intravesical route. The i.v. study used a bolus FUR dose of 4 mg/kg, which is tolerated in humans. The disposition ...

Background: Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is the most effective intravesical therapy for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), but patients can fail or supply shortages can develop. For BCG failures, radical cystectomy is recommended. However, in patients who desire bladder preservation or are poor surgical candidates, alternative salvage intravesical therapies should be

Intravesical instillation of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) has been shown to be an effective form of immunotherapy for bladder cancer. This case report describes a patient who develops systemic BCG-osis following intravesical BCG instillation and demonstrates the importance of being aware of more severe complications associated with BCG immunotherapy.

Intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) administration has been used as an adjuvant therapy after transurethral resection for superficial bladder cancer, but the exact mechanisms of its antitumor activity are not yet known. The aim of this study was to characterize the immunologic aspects of antitumor activity of BCG using an animal model. C3H/He inbred mice and murine bladder tumor cell li...

Intravesical BCG has been used successfully to treat superficial bladder cancer for three decades. However, 20% to 30% of patients will fail initial BCG therapy and 30% to 50% of patients will develop recurrent tumors within 5 years. Alternative or complementary strategies for the management of superficial bladder cancer are needed. Interleukin-12 (IL-12) is a potent T(H)1 cytokine with robust ...

5-Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is a precursor of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) that is being evaluated for use in photodiagnosis and phototherapy of malignant and nonmalignant disorders. Previous clinical studies using topical, oral, and intravesical administration have been conducted in attempts to determine the optimal route of administration for ALA. The purpose of these studies was to examine the s...

Background Intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) remains the standard adjuvant treatment for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) following transurethral resection; however, BCG failure and related toxicities are common. Objectives To compare the efficacy and toxicity of intravesical BCG and gemcitabine in the treatment of NMIBC. Methods Retrospective data were collected in the ...
