A laser ion source that will be installed on the new High Voltage Engineering (HVE) 5 MV Singletron accelerator at the Columbia University Radiological Research Accelerator Facility (RARAF) will expand the linear energy transfer (LET) range available for irradiation experiments with mammalian cells. Through laser ablation the laser ion source can produce heavy ions with high charge states from ...

The KEK Laser ablation ion source (KEK-LAIS) is under development in order to generate highly ionized metal and fully ionized carbon for future applications. Laser ablation experiments have been carried out by using NdYAG laser (0.75 J/pulse, 20 ns) at the KEK test bench. Basic parameters such as a charge-state spectrum and momentum spectrum of the plasma and extracted ion beam current have bee...

We have produced laser-cooled crystals of 232Th3+ in a linear rf Paul trap. This is the first time that a multiply charged ion has been laser cooled. Our work opens an avenue for excitation of the nuclear transition in a trapped, cold 229Th3+ ion. Laser excitation of nuclear states would establish a new bridge between atomic and nuclear physics, with the promise of new levels of metrological pr...

Free beam laser endarterectomy (LE) and contact laser endarterectomy (CLE) were compared in 15 arteriosclerotic New Zealand white rabbits. The rabbits underwent balloon catheter trauma to the thoracoabdominal aorta and were fed a 2% cholesterol diet for 18 weeks. Thoracoabdominal exploration was performed under general anesthesia and multiple endarterectomies were performed in each rabbit. Athe...

We review recent experiments at the Heidelberg Test Storage Ring which apply advanced laser cooling techniques to stored ion beams. Very high phase-space densities are achieved by threedimensional laser cooling of a coasting 9Be+ beam at 7.3 MeV. Laser-cooled, trapped Cs atoms are used as an ultracold precision target for the study of ion–atom interactions with a 74 MeV beam of 12C6+ ions.

Nanoantennas for ions: Silicon microcolumn arrays harvest light from a laser pulse to produce ions. The system behaves like a quasi-periodic antenna array with ion yields that show profound dependence on the plane of polarization and the angle of incidence of the laser beam. Photonic ion sources promise to enable enhanced control of ion production on a micro- and nanometer scale and direct inte...

A new mechanism is reported that increases electron energy gain from a laser beam of ultrarelativistic intensity in underdense plasma. The increase occurs when the laser produces an ion channel that confines accelerated electrons. The frequency of electron oscillations across the channel is strongly modulated by the laser beam, which causes parametric amplification of the oscillations and enhan...

The interaction of a trapped ion with a laser beam in the strong excitation regime is analyzed. In this regime, a variety of non{classical states of motion can be prepared either by using laser pulses of well de ned area, or by an adiabatic passage scheme based on the variation of the laser frequency. We show how these states can be used to investigate fundamental properties of quantum mechanic...

High-intensity ultrashort laser pulses focused on metal targets readily generate hot dense plasmas which accelerate ions efficiently and can pave way to compact table-top accelerators. Laser-driven ion acceleration studies predominantly focus on protons, which experience the maximum acceleration owing to their highest charge-to-mass ratio. The possibility of tailoring such schemes for the prefe...
