High birefringence induced by elliptical air hole photonic crystal fibers (EHPCFs) is analyzed numerically using the finite-element method. Statistical correlations between the birefringence and the various parameters are obtained. We found that the complex elliptical air hole is better than that of a circular one to obtain high birefringence in photonic crystal fibers. Our suggested structures...
The local parameters of linear, circular, and elliptical birefringence of backscattered light along a single-mode fiber are analyzed, and the twist-bending-induced elliptical birefringence in an extremely low birefringent single-mode fiber is measured using the backscattering method. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical calculations. For a 130-microm-diameter fibe...
This thesis reports work on passive mode-locking of thulium-doped and erbium-doped fiber ring lasers using the technique of polarization additive pulse mode-locking (PAPM). A self-starting, mode-locked Tm+3-doped fiber laser was demonstrated with 360 to 500 fsec pulses tunable from 1.8 to 1.9 pm, the largest tuning range demonstrated from a rare-earth doped fiber. This laser operated in the sol...
We present a high power fundamental mode ring oscillator with four longitudinally diode-pumped laser rods and effective birefringence compensation as a laser source for the next generation of gravitational wave detection. With this setup a linearly polarized output power of 213 W in a nearly diffraction limited beam with an M2 value of 1.15 was demonstrated.
PURPOSE To evaluate the birefringence properties of eyes with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). To compare the information from two techniques--scanning laser polarimetry (GDx) and polarization-sensitive spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT)--and investigate how they complement each other. METHODS The authors prospectively examined the eyes of two healthy subjects and 13 pa...
We report on the generation of multi-wavelength dissipative soliton (DS) in an all normal dispersion fiber laser passively mode-locked with a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). We show that depending on the strength of the cavity birefringence, stable single-, dual- and triple-wavelength DSs can be formed in the laser. The multi-wavelength soliton operation of the laser was experi...
The question of whether static stress in fused silica relaxes at room temperature is still under debate. Here, we report experimental data investigating the behavior when subjected to tensile up 2 GPa levels different environmental conditions. Our measurements are performed using an innovative combination methods; a femtosecond laser used accurately load monolithic microscale test beam non-cont...
A simple technique for reducing the loss that is due to depolarization resulting from thermally induced stress birefringence in solid-state lasers is reported. The technique uses a single intracavity quarter-wave plate with its fast or slow axis aligned parallel to the preferred plane of polarization, defined by an intracavity polarizer. This technique has been applied to a diode-bar-pumped Nd:...
networks applied to quantitative structure-activity relationship analysis. assessment of atypical birefringence images using scanning laser polarime-try with variable corneal compensation. New algorithms for multi-class cancer diagnosis using tumor gene expression signatures.
Low-birefringence (Δn<2x10(-6)), low-loss (absorption coefficient <0.006 cm(-1) at 1064 nm), single-crystal, synthetic diamond has been exploited in a CW Raman laser. The diamond Raman laser was intracavity pumped within a Nd:YVO4 laser. At the Raman laser wavelength of 1240 nm, CW output powers of 1.6 W and a slope efficiency with respect to the absorbed diode-laser pump power (at 808 nm) of ~...
