This paper addresses the modeling of strains and forces generated by magnetostrictive transducers in response to applied magnetic elds. The magnetostrictive eeect is modeled by considering both the rotation of magnetic moments in response to the eld and the elastic vibrations in the transducer. The former is modeled with the Jiles-Atherton model of ferromagnetic hysteresis in combination with a...

Magnetostrictive materials are routinely employed as actuator and sensor elements in a wide variety of noise and vibration control problems. In infrastructural applications, other technologies such as hydraulic actuation, piezoelectric materials and more recently, magnetorheological fluids, are being favored for actuation and sensing purposes. These technologies have reached a degree of technic...

Magnetostrictive transducers are becoming increasingly prevalent in industrial applications including high speed milling and hybrid motor design due to their broadband, large force capabilities. To achieve the level of performance required by such applications, however, these transducers must operate in nonlinear and hysteretic regimes. To accommodate this nonlinear behavior, models and control...

The lead-free ferroelectric 0.5Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3 - 0.5(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 (BCZT) is a promising component for multifunctional multiferroics due to its excellent room temperature piezoelectric properties. Having a composition close to the polymorphic phase boundary between the orthorhombic and tetragonal phases, it deserves a case study for analysis of its potential for modern electronics applicatio...

We investigate the role of lithographically-induced strain relaxation in a micron-scaled device fabricated from epitaxial thin films of the magnetostrictive alloy Fe81Ga19. The strain relaxation due to lithographic patterning induces a magnetic anisotropy that competes with the magnetocrystalline and shape induced anisotropies to play a crucial role in stabilising a flux-closing domain pattern....

The paper reports on the effect of substituting Mn for Fe on the magnetostrictive and related properties of Fe81−xMnxGa19 alloys. Samples of composition were prepared in polycrystalline form and were all single phase BCC. It is shown that the magnetostriction observed in Fe81Ga19 can be enhanced up to about 11% by Mn substitution with a maximum effect at x = 8. The change in the magnetostrictiv...

In this paper we propose a new family of temperature distribution sensors based on the magnetostrictive delay line technique. An array of parallel conductors is set orthogonal to the delay line and used for pulsed current transmission. coil is set around the one end of the delay line in order to receive the magneto-elastic pulses. A platinum wire or a thermistor is electrically connected to the...

Applications utilizing smart materials are rapidly increasing and include high speed milling and hybrid motor design. Such application utilize magnetostrictive transducers operating in hysteretic and nonlinear regimes. To achieve the high performance capabilities of these transducers, models and control laws must accommodate the nonlinear dynamics in a manner which is robust and facilitates rea...

The magnetic anisotropy is decreased with increasing temperature in normal magnetic materials, which is harmful to the thermal stability of magnetic devices. Here, we report the realization of positive temperature coefficient of magnetic anisotropy in a novel composite combining β-phase polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) with magnetostrictive materials (magnetostrictive film/PVDF bilayer structure)...
