INTRODUCTION Meningiomas are intracranial brain tumours that frequently recur. Recurrence rates up to 20% in 20 years for benign meningiomas, up to 80% for atypical meningiomas and up to 100% for malignant meningiomas, have been reported. The most important prognostic factors for meningioma recurrence are meningioma grade, meningioma invasiveness and radicality of neurosurgical resection. The a...

Rat basophilic leukaemia cells (RBL-2H3-M1) were used to study the characteristics of the store-operated Ca(2+) release-activated Ca(2+) current (I(CRAC)) and the magnesium-nucleotide-regulated metal cation current (MagNuM) (which is conducted by the LTRPC7 channel). Pipette solutions containing 10 mM BAPTA and no added ATP induced both currents in the same cell, but the time to half-maximal ac...

Meningiomas are central nervous system tumors that originate from the meningeal coverings of the brain and spinal cord. Most meningiomas are pathologically benign or atypical, but 3-5% display malignant features. Despite previous studies on benign and atypical meningiomas, the key molecular pathways involved in malignant transformation remain to be determined, as does the extent of epigenetic a...

BACKGROUND Meningiomas show high recurrence rates even after curative tumor removal. The invasiveness of meningiomas may contribute to their high recurrence rates. Recently, c-MET and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) have been reported to be involved in cancer invasion. METHODS We examined the immunohistochemical expression of c-MET and HGF in 100 cases of patients with meningiomas who have und...

Third ventricle meningiomas are rare, representing approximately 0.15% of all meningiomas. The majority of third ventricular meningiomas are located posteriorly in the pineal region. Less commonly, they arise in the anterior part of the third ventricle. We report the cases of two patients with large and giant meningiomas originating in the anterior part of the third ventricle.

The histologic distinction between meningiomas and other tumors of the central nervous system occasionally can be difficult. Claudin-1 is a tight junction-associated protein recently shown to be expressed in anaplastic meningiomas. The purpose of this study was to determine whether immunohistochemical staining for claudin-1 could help distinguish meningiomas from histologic mimics, compared wit...

In both non-ovulating and ovulating toads of the species, Bufo melanostictus, the fimbrium stained only weakly for mucopolysaccharides (MPs) whereas the infundibulum stained strongly for neutral MPs and also for glycogen. In the non-ovulating toad, only neutral and sulphated MPs were detected in the goblet cells of the upper magnum, whereas sulphated, neutral and sialomucins were detected in th...

The study investigated the effect of various doses of carbendazim on the morphology of the magnum of the Japanese quail. No morphological changes were observed in the magnum in birds treated with carbendazim at doses of 25 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg bodyweight. A carbendazim dose of 400 mg/kg bodyweight was the lowest dose which caused morphological changes in the magnum. Histologically, carbendazim c...

Background: Meningiomas are among the most common tumors of the brain. Skull base meningiomas comprise s major part of brain meningiomas. They are difficult to treat because of proximity to major vital neuro-vascular structures which makes their surgical resection hazardous and fraught with a high rate of complications. Radiosurgery is considered as an alternative efficient ...

Resection of foramen magnum lesions through a lateral approach can be technically challenging. Surgical avenues to foramen magnum lesions include a suboccipital craniectomy with C1 laminectomy, a modified far lateral approach with little condylar drilling, or via an anterior approach. The authors report their surgical experience in the treatment of a 36-yearold male with bilateral C1 dumbbell n...
