Predicting the (distributional) meaning of derivationally related words (read / read+er) from one another has recently been recognized as an instance of distributional compositional meaning construction. However, the properties of this task are not yet well understood. In this paper, we present an analysis of two such composition models on a set of German derivation patterns (e.g., -in, durch-)...

This paper seeks definitions aiding design methodologies for evolving virtual morphologies, by the examination of one such morphology in analogue architecture: The Topkapı Palace. 1 Background The interest that instigated this study lies in a project developed earlier this year, entitled “The Bridge Project” [01], a virtual 3D structure of free associative content derived from the internet, one...

Compound verbs in Korean show properties of both syntactic phrases and lexical items. Earlier studies of compound verbs have either assumed two homonymous types, i.e. one as a syntactic phrase and the other as a lexical item, or posited some sort of transformation from a syntactic phrase into a lexical item. In this paper, I show empirical and conceptual problems for earlier studies, and presen...

A brief account of Hellberg's morphology system (flellberg, 78J is presented its aims and structure, and how it deals with inflection, derivation and compounding. Then there follows a discussion of our experience when implementing and running the program and evaluating the success of the system. Discussion points are accompanied by run-time examples. Some improvements on the original system hav...

In this article some advanced methods for sound hybridizations by means of the theory of sound-types will be shown. After a short presentation of the theory, a formal definition will be given. A framework implementing the theory will be presented in detail, with an emphasis on the modules aimed at the sound transformations. Hybridization is achieved by means of two orthogonal processes called t...

We review the most outstanding issues related to the study of the morphology of the Horizontal Branch (HB) in the Color–Magnitude Diagrams of Galactic Globular Clusters and its use as age indicator. It is definitely demonstrated (see also Bolte, this meeting) that age cannot be the only 2nd-P driving the HB morphology. Other candidate 2nd-Ps are briefly examined, with special attention to the p...

We present the CimS submissions to the 2014 Shared Task for the language pair EN→DE. We address the major problems that arise when translating into German: complex nominal and verbal morphology, productive compounding and flexible word ordering. Our morphologyaware translation systems handle word formation issues on different levels of morpho-syntactic modeling.

In theory, there is no problem generalizing morphological operators to colour images. In practice, it has proved quite tricky to define a generalization that “makes sense”. This could be because many generalizations violate our implicit assumptions about what kind of transformations should not matter. Or in other words, to what transformations operators should be invariant. As a possible soluti...
