Meningiomas, despite being the mostly well-differentiated tumours, are quite often characterised by invasive growth and recurrences. As this fact may be caused by proangiogenic factors, we have investigated immunoexpression of CD31 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in these tumours. The materials included 10 atypical meningiomas (G2), and the following subtypes of benign meningiomas...

Linear enhancement (flare sign) along the dura mater that was continuous with or emanated from the dural margin of meningiomas was frequently observed on contrast-enhanced MR images obtained in 18 patients with intracranial meningiomas (surgically proved). Preoperative MR studies obtained at 1.5 T after administration of gadopentetate dimeglumine were reviewed retrospectively to determine the c...

We studied the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) and tissue inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinase (TIMP) in microcystic meningiomas to investigate a possible underlying mechanism for the development of microcysts and of peritumoral edema, which are frequent characteristics of this rare subtype. Between October 1995 and June 2004, 10 of 19 patients who had histologically confirmed p...

The lectins Peanut agglutinin (PNA), Canavalia ensiformis (Con A), Ulex europaeus-1 (UEA-1), Dolichos biflorus (DBA), Triticum vulgaris (WGA) were studied in a series of 36 meningiomas (16 meningotheliomatous-including 3 recurrences, 7 transitional, 4 angiomatous, 2 "hemangiopericytic", 3 papillary-including 1 recurrence, 4 anaplastic-including 3 recurrences. PNA binds to all cases of meningoth...

The occurrence of meningiomas in children is rare, accounting for less than 5% of tumors of the central nervous system in childhood. This is a retrospective study of 10 patients with CNS meningiomas. The goal of this study was to determine the epidemiology, clinical and radiological features, and long-term outcome of meningiomas. The results ware compared with those reported in the literature.

Meningioma accounts for approximately one-third of primary central nervous system tumors. Most meningiomas are benign, although up to one third are classified as atypical or malignant. We describe a 63-year Caucasian male presenting with pleural metastases from an intracranial meningioma. Distant metastases from meningiomas are infrequently found in clinical practice and mostly are associated w...

Meningiomas are typically benign, slowly growing tumors. Meningiomas of the spine are most commonly intradural, extramedullary lesions and account of 25% – 46% of all spinal cord tumors in adults (Peker et al., 2005). Approximately 80% of spinal meningiomas occur in the thoracic spine, followed in frequency by cervical and lumbar lesions (Helseth et al., 1989; Levy et al., 1982; Roux et al., 19...

Meningiomas are well-recognized tumors of the central nervous system. Extracranial meningiomas, secondarily extended into the paranasal sinuses, are rare tumors, comprising approximately 2% of all meningiomas. Extracranial meningiomas of the paranasal sinuses may present a diagnostic and the rapeutic challenge. We present a retrospective review comprising three cases and discuss the clinical pr...

Most intrasellar meningiomas are located in the subdiaphragmatic and supraglandular region because they originate from the diaphragma sellae. Subglandular meningiomas located under the pituitary gland are extremely rare. Intrasellar meningiomas in the subdiaphragmatic and subglandular region probably originate from the dura in the sellar floor. We report a case of a subglandular meningioma alon...

BACKGROUND Meningiomas are common brain tumours and display gender, racial and ethnic differences in their demographic profile. The demographic profile of our patients diagnosed with intracranial meningiomas is presented and compared with the literature. OBJECTIVES To determine the age, gender, racial and ethnic distribution of our patients diagnosed with intracranial meningiomas. METHODS C...
