The distribution of neutral copper oxide clusters in the gas phase created by laser ablation is detected and characterized through time-of-flight mass spectroscopy (TOFMS). The neutral copper oxide clusters are ionized by two different approaches: Multiphoton absorption of 355 and 193 nm radiation; and single photon absorption of 118 nm radiation. Based on the observed cluster patterns as a fun...

We investigate the spatial, kinematic and chemical properties of globular cluster systems formed in merging and interacting galaxies using N-body/SPH simulations. Although we can not resolve individual clusters in our simulation, we assume that they form in collapsing molecular clouds when the local external gas pressure exceeds 10 kB (where kB is the Boltzmann constant). Several simulations ar...

Metalloproteins (MPs) comprise one-third of all known protein structures. This diverse set of proteins contain a plethora of unique inorganic moieties capable of performing chemistry that would otherwise be impossible using only the amino acids found in nature. Most of the well-studied MPs are generally viewed as being very rigid in structure, and it is widely thought that the properties of the...

We present recent multi-object spectroscopy of globular clusters in the Virgo gEs M49 and M87. In M49, we have a total of 144 confirmed clusters out to 8 arcmin radius (∼ 6 R ef f or 35 kpc). We find that the blue (metal-poor) clusters have both a higher velocity dispersion and rotation than the red (metal-poor) clusters. For the metal-rich population we place an upper limit of (v/σ) proj < 0.3...

Some of the properties of the globular clusters in NGC 5128 the nearest giant elliptical galaxy are compared to those of Galactic globular clusters. Assuming the colormetallicity relations that hold for Galactic globular clusters one finds that the metal-poor clusters in NGC 5128 that have [Fe/H] < -1.80 are significantly fainter than are the more metal-rich globulars in that galaxy. No such me...

By using laser ablation of the mixtures of a transition metal (M: Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pd, Ag) plus lead, M/Pb binary cluster anions were observed except for Zn, and the number of transition metal atoms contained in the binary clusters is at most 4. This behavior is different from that reported previously for M/Ge binary clusters. The experiments indicate that it is also very difficu...

An unprecedented polynuclear metal cluster-pillared triangular prism was built by a macrocycle-directing strategy. Discrete architectures of three silver cluster-involved metallosupramolecules were characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography and spectroscopy studies.

Using density functional theory with the TPSSh functional and the 6-311+G(d) basis set, we extensively searched for the global minima of two metallic atoms doped boron clusters B6M2, B7M2, B12M2 and B14M2 with transition metal element M being Co and Fe. Structural identifications reveal that B7Co2, B7Fe2 and B7CoFe clusters have global minima in a B-cyclic motif, in which a perfectly planar B7 ...

We observed the bare W2(+) metal cation upon electron ionization of the weakly bound W(CO)6 dimer. This metal cation can be only observed due to the fast conversion of the weak cluster bond into a strong covalent bond between the metal moieties.

ABSTRACf. We present the photoelectron (photodetacment) spectra of K2:-19 recorded using 2.540 eV photons. These spectra are highly structured, providing a wealth of information about the electronic structure of alkali metal clusters, including adiabatic electron affinities and electronic spliuings for each size. Spectral assignments have been made with guidance from theory. For the smaller clu...
