Microparticle separation and concentration based on size has become indispensable in many biomedical and environmental applications. In this paper we describe a passive microfluidic device with spiral microchannel geometry for complete separation of particles. The design takes advantage of the inertial lift and viscous drag forces acting on particles of various sizes to achieve differential mig...

This report discusses the method for the fabrication of microchannels. Microchannel production is a two step process. First, soft photolithography methods are implemented to fabricate a reusable mold. The mold is then used to create the microchannel, which consists of polydimethylsiloxane, or PDMS, and glass. Bio-related applications are also discussed.

This multicenter clinical trial of platform-switched laser-microchannel implants supports findings from a previous preclinical trial. Previous information indicated that an interimplant distance narrower than 3 mm would result in decrease in the crestal bone level, but the results of this investigation suggest that a more optimistic clinical result can be anticipated for implants and abutments ...

Neurally controlled prosthetics that cosmetically and functionally mimic amputated limbs remain a clinical need because state of the art neural prosthetics only provide a fraction of a natural limb's functionality. Here, we report on the fabrication and capability of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and epoxy-based SU-8 photoresist microchannel scaffolds to serve as viable constructs for peripheral ...

The electrostatic force required for the driving of liquid droplet injected in a microchannel was studied to obtain the guiding principle to reduce the driving voltage of waveguide optical switch based on the movement of droplet. We analytically calculated the relation between the threshold voltage and velocity of droplet and the surface roughness of microchannel, and clarified some unconfirmed...

Single nanoparticle (NP) collisions technique has been widely employed in electrocatalysis. However, the short collision duration of single NPs hinders further improvement their electrocatalytic performance. Here, to increase dynamic electron tunneling region, enhanced near-wall hindered diffusion is introduced stochastic process by coupling a Au ultramicroelectrode (UME) with confined microcha...

The development and growth of microfluidics has been mainly based on various novel fabrication techniques for downsizing and integration of the micro/nano components. Especially, an effective fabrication technique of three-dimensional structures still continues to be strongly required in order to improve device performance, functionality, and device packing density because the conventional lami...

Microchannel-patterned starch-poly(capro-lactone)/hydydroxyapatite (SPCL-HA) and starch-poly(lactic acid) (SPLA) composite membranes were produced for use as a laminated tissue-engineering scaffold that incorporates both physical and biochemical patterns. For this purpose, SPCL (30% starch) blended with inorganic hydroxyl apatite (50%) and SPLA (50% starch) membranes were made with compressive ...

This paper presents experimental results from a prototype of a microchannel heat exchanger used in a residential air-conditioning system as an air-cooled condenser. The main objectives were to analyze effects of the microchannel condenser on system performance. The commercially available system that utilizes a condenser with a round tube and plate fins was experimentally evaluated first, then t...

We investigate a mathematical model describing the flow of a liquid in a microchannel. The model incorporates immersed objects in the fluid as well as fixed obstacles and boundaries of the microchannel. Objects can have different elastic properties, including solid objects and deformable objects. The flow description accounts for all types of mechanical interactions: fluid-object, object-object...
