Theories of laryngeal realism (Honeybone 2005, Iverson & Salmons 1995, Beckman et al. 2011) argue for a tight correspondence between a segment’s phonetic cues and the (laryngeal) phonological features that represent it. Consequently, the ‘p’/‘b’ contrast in French, expressed phonetically by vocal fold vibration during the stop closure is represented by a [voice] feature whereas the ‘p’/‘b’ cont...

In connection with the phonological distinction between voiced and voiceless sounds in languages, it can be observed that voiced sounds are relatively frequently devoiced, i.e. they are realized phonetically with little or no vocal fold vibration. This study investigated the devoicing of /v/ and /z/ in Standard Southern British English (SSBE) by means of a production experiment in which vocal f...

The two distinct sound sources comprising voiced frication, voicing and frication, interact. One effect is that the periodic source at the glottis modulates the amplitude of the frication source originating in the vocal tract above the constriction. Voicing strength and modulation depth for frication noise were measured for sustained English voiced fricatives using high-pass filtering, spectral...

We have analyzed over 13000 bouts of laughter, in over 65 hours of unscripted, naturally occurring multi-party meetings, to identify discriminative contexts of voiced and unvoiced laughter. Our results show that, in meetings, laughter is quite frequent, accounting for almost 10% of all vocal activity effort by time. Approximately a third of all laughter is unvoiced, but meeting participants var...

Robust vector quantization of LSF parameters at a low bit rate is essential for voice coders operating below 5 Kbps. A novel aspect of the proposed technique is the use of decorrelated residual LSF vectors from speech mode based backward prediction along with a multi-stage VQ design. Rates as low as 12 bits per 20 ms speech frame for the stationary voiced speech mode and 22 bits/frame for unvoi...

Although Canada has two official languages, French and English, it is well-known that these languages are not used equally across the country. Quebec is French-dominant, with nearly 8 out of 10 people reporting French as their native language compared to 8.3% who are native Anglophones (Statistics Canada, 2012b). In Alberta, English is the mother tongue of 77.0% of residents, with native Franco...

The purpose of our study is to show that phonological knowledge is an important basis for making predictions during speech perception. Taking the phonological constraint in English that coda obstruent clusters agree in their value for voicing, we conducted two experiments using vowel–stop–fricative sequences, where the task was to identify the fricative. Stimuli included sequences that were eit...

Speech syntesizer is a system that aim at carrying the text to an acoustic surroundings understandably and naturally. Similarly voiced expression recogniser is a system that aim at transforming the voice in acoustic surroundings to tha text by computer. The researchs about voiced expression recogniser have materialized highly in English Gramer. İn last years, it makes essential using new materi...

The aim of this work is to develop ajlexible and eficient approach to the classifcation of the ratio of voiced to unvoiced excitation sources in continuous speech. To achieve this aim we adopt a probabilistic neural network approach. This is accomplished by designing a multi layer perceptron classifer trained by steepest descent minimization of the Least Relative Entropy W) cost function. By us...
