2014 Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is a vaccine derived from attenuated strains of Mycobacterium bovis. Mycobacterium bovis BCG-based therapy is considered an effective alternative for bladder carcinoma in situ when exclusive transurethral resection is inadequate. Among the complications associated with therapy, there are few reports in the literature on reactive arthritis. We report the case ...

We report the first case of bovine tuberculosis in a free-living Iberian lynx (Lynx pardina), an extremely endangered feline, from Doñana National Park in Spain. The isolate (Mycobacterium bovis) correlates by molecular characterization with other isolates from wild ungulates in the park, strongly suggesting an epidemiologic link. Mycobacterium bovis infects many animal species, with wild and f...

Our study is the first report of exceptional Mycobacterium bovis strains that have some characteristics of M. tuberculosis. The strains were isolated from 8 patients living in Kazakhstan. While molecular markers were typical for M. bovis, growth characteristics and biochemical test results were intermediate between M. bovis and M. tuberculosis.

Recent outbreaks of human tuberculosis in the United States caused by Mycobacterium bovis have implicated cheese originating in Mexico as a source of these infections. A total of 203 samples of cheese originating in Mexico were cultured, and M. bovis was recovered from one specimen. Therefore, M. bovis can be recovered from cheese and may be a source of human infections.

P27 is an antigenic membrane lipoprotein synthesized by members of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. Northern blotting and RT-PCR experiments indicated that the genes encoding P27 and a putative antibiotic transporter (P55) form an operon. A promoter region was identified and characterized by deletion analysis in Mycobacterium smegmatis. Two transcription initiation points were mapped in ...

Identification and characterization of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains are important for clinical and therapeutic management of tuberculosis. Real-time PCR with a high-resolution melt assay was found to improve the diagnostic process. The assay includes differentiation between M. tuberculosis and Mycobacterium bovis based on one single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the narGHJI and oxy...

In spite of the great advancement in the diagnosis, treatment and control programs of tuberculosis during the past decades, bovine tuberculosis still represent an imminent threat to the public and considerable obstacles for development of bovine industry especially in developing countries [1]. All animal species and humans of all age groups are susceptible to the disease. Mycobacterium bovis, a...

We evaluated a multiplex-PCR to differentiate Mycobacterium bovis from M. tuberculosis Complex (MTC) by one step amplification based on simultaneous detection of pncA 169 C > G change in M. bovis and the IS6110 present in MTC species. Our findings showed the proposed multiplex-PCR is a very useful tool for complementation in differentiating M. bovis from other cultured MTC species.

Panama remains free of zoonotic tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium bovis. However, DNA fingerprinting of 7 M. bovis isolates from a 2013 bovine tuberculosis outbreak indicated minimal homology with strains previously circulating in Panama. M. bovis dispersion into Panama highlights the need for enhanced genotype testing to track zoonotic infections.

We reviewed 86 cases of human immunodeficiency virus and tuberculosis coinfection; 34.9% were caused by Mycobacterium bovis. Patients with M. bovis infection were more likely to have advanced immunosuppression (CD4 T cell counts ≤200 cells/μL). Hispanic ethnicity, male sex, and abdominal disease were strongly associated with M. bovis disease.
