conclusions concurrent pulmonary nocardiosis and tuberculosis is frequent in hiv-infected patients. rapid and sensitive methods such as pcr are recommended for detection of such co-infections. results from 157 sputum specimens, positive samples by acid fast staining, culture and pcr for m. tuberculosis were reported for 7.6% (12/157), 10.1% (16/157) and 7% (11/157) of samples, respectively. no ...

Three molecular assays were evaluated for the direct detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex bacteria in 125 respiratory and 22 nonrespiratory samples. The overall sensitivities obtained were as follows: GenoType MTBDRplus, 97.9%; GenoType Mycobacteria Direct, 93.7%; Gen-Probe Mycobacterium tuberculosis Amplified Direct Test, 89.6%. The specificity of the assays used was 100%.

Mycobacterium was verified in animals from a Brazilian dairy herd, a total of 42 samples from 30 cows were submitted to culture and the isolated strains were analyzed by two polymerase chain reaction (PCR), the first specific for species belonging to the Mycobacterium complex (MTBC) and the other for differentiating M. tuberculosis from M. bovis. Twenty seven samples (64.3%) from 18 animals (60...

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious and transmissible disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and closely related mycobacterial species (M. bovis, M. africanum, and M. microti). These species, obligate pathogens, compose what is known as the M. tuberculosis complex. Nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) species are mycobacterial species other than those belonging to the Mycobacterium tuberculo...

We present a short summary of recent observations on the global distribution of the major clades of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, the causative agent of tuberculosis. This global distribution was defined by data-mining of an international spoligotyping database, SpolDB3. This database contains 11708 patterns from as many clinical isolates originating from more than 90 countries. The 1...

A rapid, accurate tuberculosis diagnostic tool that is compatible with the needs of tuberculosis-endemic settings is a long-sought goal. An immunofluorescence microtip sensor is described that detects Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex cells in sputum in 25 minutes. Concentration mechanisms based on flow circulation and electric field are combined at different scales to concentrate target bacte...

The global control of tuberculosis remains a challenge from the standpoint of diagnosis, detection of drug resistance, and treatment. Because treatment can only be initiated when infection is detected and is based on the results of antimicrobial susceptibility testing, there recently has been a marked increase in the development and testing of novel assays designed to detect Mycobacterium tuber...

Mycobacteria that cause tuberculosis in animals and humans belong to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. Techniques for conventional diagnosis are time-consuming and do not differentiate between different strains belonging to the M. tuberculosis complex. The aim of this study was to evaluate a multiplex PCR assay applicable to mycobacteria in culture with the capacity to differentiate diffe...
