BACKGROUND Neonatal hypoglycemia is common and can cause neurologic impairment, but evidence supporting thresholds for intervention is limited. METHODS We performed a prospective cohort study involving 528 neonates with a gestational age of at least 35 weeks who were considered to be at risk for hypoglycemia; all were treated to maintain a blood glucose concentration of at least 47 mg per dec...
BACKGROUND Congenital isolated adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) deficiency may be rare, but it could be an underestimated cause of neonatal death. Our objective was to shorten the time between first symptoms and diagnosis. METHODS This single-centre retrospective case-cohort study was carried out on eight consecutive patients. RESULTS Two had the neonatal form and 6 the late onset form. ...
The use of Dextrostix Reflectance Meter (DRM)* to measure blood glucose has been reported recently. The method has proved to be simnple, rapid, and accurate, and to correlate well with various reference methods (Mazzaferri et al., 1970; Jarret, Keen, and Hardwick, 1970; Schersten, 1971; Deckert and Futtrup, 1971). The handiness of the DRM seemed to make it an excellent tool in the diagnosis of ...
background this study evaluates the frequency of diabetes complication in infants of diabetic mothers (idms), and investigates its relationship with patients’ follow-up care and maternal glucose control. material and methods diabetic mothers who delivered in ahvaz imam khomeini hospital in 2011 were given questionnaires to gather data on gender of infants, gestational age, type of diabetes (ove...
We are reporting an infant with persistent abnormal liver function, neonatal jaundice, and intermittent hypoglycemia. Evaluation confirmed congenital hypopituitarism, in the absence of congenital anomalies and midline defect. His jaundice and abnormal liver function improved after treatment with Levothyroxine and hydrocortisone.
OBJECTIVE To review our 4-year experience (2008-2011) with delivery room triage of large for gestational age infants of diabetic mothers. DESIGN/METHODS Retrospective cohort investigation of 311 large for gestational age infants of diabetic mothers (White's Class A1 (77), A2 (87), B (77), and C-R (70)). RESULTS Of 311 women, 31% delivered at 34-36 weeks gestational age and 69% at term. Whil...
OBJECTIVE To investigate the correlation between hypoglycemia and positive rate of inborn error of metabolism (IEM) in neonatal intensive care unit. METHODS 160 patients from a neonatal intensive care unit were enrolled. Blood glucose was measured by Roche Modular chemistry. The dry blood on filter papers, collected from 160 patients, was tested by tandem mass spectrometry to detect 35 inborn...
Introduction: Neonatal Seizure is defined as a paroxysmal involuntary disturbance of cerebral function. seizures are common problem. Common etiology neonatal brain disorders, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, central nervous system (CNS) infections, CNS bleeds, and structural anomalies the or secondary to metabolic problems, for example, hypoglycemia, hyponatremia, other electrolyte disturbances...
OBJECTIVE: To report a case of Persistent Hyperinsulinemic Hypoglycemia in twins which is a situation not yet reported in the literature. METHODS: Report of seizures in identical twins, from consanguineous parents, with persistent hypoglycemia as cause of the seizures. Laboratory tests, performed for etiological investigation of the hypoglycemia, included thyroid hormones (T4/TSH), insulin, cor...
