We review studies of vibrational energy transfer in a molecular junction geometry, consisting of a molecule bridging two heat reservoirs, solids or large chemical compounds. This setup is of interest for applications in molecular electronics, thermoelectrics, and nanophononics, and for addressing basic questions in the theory of classical and quantum transport. Calculations show that system siz...

Estimation of the heat flux for a quenched solid tungsten sphere is demonstrated using a filter formulation. Even though the values of the thermal properties significantly change during quenching, nearly as accurate heat flux estimates as with a temperature-variable analyses are possible using the proposed filter method. The filter algorithm is very efficient for the repeated analyses of simila...

Genetic algorithms are employed to optimize dimensionless temperature in nonlinear heat conduction problems. Three common geometries are selected for the analysis and the concept of minimum entropy generation is used to determine the optimum temperatures under the same constraints. The thermal conductivity is assumed to vary linearly with temperature while internal heat generation is assumed to...

The two-dimensional steady-state Boltzmann equation for hard-disk molecules in the presence of a temperature gradient has been solved explicitly to second order in density and the temperature gradient. The two-dimensional equation of state and some physical quantities are calculated from it and compared with those for the two-dimensional steady-state Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook equation and informati...

A lattice Boltzmann model for convection-diffusion equation with nonlinear convection and isotropic-diffusion terms is proposed through selecting equilibrium distribution function properly. The model can be applied to the common real and complex-valued nonlinear evolutionary equations, such as the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, Burgers-Fisher equation, nonline...

The inverse heat conduction problem also frequently referred as the sideways heat equation, in short SHE, is considered as a mathematical model for a real application, where it is desirable for someone to determine the temperature on the surface of a body. Since the surface itself is inaccessible for measurements, one is restricted to use temperature data from the interior measurements. From a ...

A dual-reciprocity boundary element method is presented for the numerical solution of initial-boundary value problems governed by a nonlinear partial differential equation for heat conduction in nonhomogeneous anisotropic materials. To assess the validity and accuracy of the method, some specific problems are solved. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq 000: 000–...

Based on the recently introduced fractional Taylor’s formula, a fractional heat conduction constitutive equation is formulated by expanding the single-phase lag model using the fractional Taylor’s formula. Combining with the energy balance equation, the derived fractional heat conduction equation has been shown to be capable of modeling diffusion-to-Thermal wave behavior of heat propagation by ...

Longitudinal heat conduction is an important parameter in the cryogenic field, especially in cryogenic heat exchangers. In the present work, the parasitic effect of tube wall longitudinal heat conduction on temperature measurement has been studied in cryogenic laminar hydrogen flow. The effects of various parameters such as wall cold end temperature, wall thermal conductivity, gas volumetric fl...

In this paper we study a free boundary problem modeling a phase-change process by using microwave heating technique. The mathematical model consists of Maxwell’s equations coupled with nonlinear heat conduction with a phase-change. The enthalpy form is used to characterize the phase-change process in the model. It is shown that the problem has a global solution.
