The structure of the nucleated erythrocyte of frog and chicken has been investigated by electron microscopy and correlated with the distribution of haemoglobin and DNA-containing material determined by haem absorption and Feulgen staining in the light microscope. The nuclei of both species are found to contain haemoglobin which is continuous with the haemoglobin in the cytoplasm through holes o...
The impact of cell dose (number of nucleated donor cells per kilogram recipient weight) on transplantation outcome is controversial and may differ for allogeneic and identical twin (syngeneic) bone marrow transplants. We studied the association between cell dose and outcome in 100 unmanipulated identical twin bone marrow transplantations for leukemia, reported to the International Bone Marrow T...
The microtubule cytoskeleton of a mammalian cell originates from the perinuclear region and controls membrane trafficking, organelle positioning, and cell polarisation. Although the centrosome is viewed as the major microtubule organising centre, there is emerging evidence that the Golgi apparatus also has a role in the nucleation of perinuclear microtubules during the interphase. In a recent p...
Objective(s): Cord blood (CB) is known as a valuable source of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC). Identifying strategies that enhance expansion and maintain engraftment and homing capacity of HSCs can improve transplant efficiency. In this study, we examined different culture conditions on ex vivo expansion and homing capacity of CB-HSCs. Materials and Methods: In this study, 4-5 different units o...
Thirty one term large for gestational age (LGA) infants of non-diabetic mothers were compared with 30 appropriate for gestational age controls. Median absolute nucleated red blood cell counts, lymphocyte counts, and packed cell volumes were significantly higher in the LGA infants than the controls. It is possible that LGA babies of non-diabetic mothers are exposed to relative intrauterine hypoxia.
Originally recognized for their role in triggering T cell responses that caused the rejection of transplanted tissue, it is now known that MHC-encoded molecules are involved in immunesurveillance and antigen presentation to T lymphocytes. These MHC molecules act as “signposts” that displays fragmented pieces of an antigen (viral proteins in virus-infected cells or mutated proteins in tumor cell...
