Anomalies are the source of all scientific investigation and discovery. The mysterious disappearance of ships at sea has long been recognized as a standard type of anomaly. A new theory proposes that the catastrophic release of giant methane bubbles from the ocean floor can possibly account for the disappearance of some ships. The theory is both novel and plausible. However it has limited appli...

We present a theoretical and numerical study of the decay of an internal wave caused by scattering at undulating sea-floor topography, with an eye towards building a simple model in which the decay of internal tides in the ocean can be estimated. As is well known, the interactions of internal waves with irregular boundary shapes lead to a mathematically ill-posed problem, so care needs to be ta...

It is shown that the Ocean-Earth crust interface can propagate gravity-sound Rayleigh waves. Dispersion properties of waves and flux of energy are derived. It is shown that the waves split into low and fast velocity branches. The fast branch has a multimode structure and has a cutoff in frequency and wave number. Numerical solutions are discussed.

ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) is applied widely currently which is an important tool for detecting in the water, salving on the ocean floor and resources surveying in the ocean. However it is common for ROV that is affected by surging and altering barycenter in the practice, and it is easy for pitching usually, and then ROV is low efficiency. Aiming at the problem, we designed a system of pit...

Ocean sequestration of carbon dioxide is considered to be a potentially important method of reducing greenhouse gas emissions (US DOE, 1999). Oceans are currently the largest atmospheric carbon dioxide sink; and certainly, enough storage capacity exists in the oceans to hold all of the CO2 that we can emit for many years. Additionally, technologies exist that allow us to pump liquid CO2 into th...

While there are many generalized schemes representing the biogeographic distribution of life in the deep sea, reviewed here, a comprehensive analysis has not been undertaken since Vinogradova (1979, 1997) for the abyssal and Belyaev (1989) for the hadal. The purpose of this paper is to propose global biogeographic provinces for the lower bathyal and abyssal benthos (>800 m depths) in order to a...

The ocean floor makes up the majority of Earth's surface and yet, its geomorphology is not fully understood. Recent debate has focused on whether sea level changes—driven by Milankovitch glacial cycles—generate abyssal hill fabric modulating mid-ocean ridge magma supply. However, periodicities longer than cycles are prominent in bathymetry. Using crustal thickness estimates from two-phase flow ...

We present a method for extracting verbcentered constructions (VCCs) from corpora. In our framework, simple and multiword verbs, with or without valence are all VCCs. They are treated uniformly, from e.g. to breathe till e.g. to take something into consideration. In order to extract VCCs we represent the corpus as a sequence of clauses that contain a verb together with all its NP dependents. Th...

Mapping sediment deposition and erosion by thermohaline ocean bottom currents is important for the development of infrastructure, future geo resources understanding sedimentology contourites abyssal wavefields. However, only a limited percentage (estimated 20%) floor has been mapped directly through seismic or sonar imaging. To better delineate where zones current exist, we develop prediction f...

Three types of serpentine polymorphs (lizardite, chrysotile and antigorite) are found in serpentinites from the Baft ophiolite mélange which are different in the textural features and chemical compositions. Lizardite is seen as layered structures that set in the matrix of peridotites, while antigorite is formed in veins or sheared zones as blade crystals and chrysotile develops as shiny and gol...
