Olanzapine is widely used in treating multiple domains of schizophrenia symptoms but induces serious metabolic side-effects. Recent evidence has showed that co-treatment of betahistine (a histaminergic H1 receptor agonist and H3 receptor antagonist) is effective for preventing olanzapine-induced weight gain/obesity, however it is not clear whether this co-treatment affects on the primary therap...

Twenty-eight cases from 2004-2007 involving olanzapine were analyzed at the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office. Olanzapine was initially detected by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and then confirmed by GC with a nitrogen-phosphorus detector. In cases where olanzapine was detected, concentrations in peripheral blood (PB), central blood (CB), liver, and vitreou...

There is a dearth of evidence on the safety of the use of antipsychotics during pregnancy. Olanzapine, a pregnancy category C drug, has no unequivocal evidence of harm to the fetus. Against this backdrop, we report the first case of a tracheo-esophageal fistula (TEF) in a newborn following maternal antenatal exposure to olanzapine. A 29-year-old woman with acute psychotic disorder had been trea...

Olanzapine is a first line medication for the treatment of schizophrenia, but it is also one of the atypical antipsychotics carrying the highest risk of weight gain. Metformin was reported to produce significant attenuation of antipsychotic-induced weight gain in patients, while the study of preventing olanzapine-induced weight gain in an animal model is absent. Berberine, an herbal alkaloid, w...

Background: Hospitalization is a costly and distressing event associated with relapse during schizophrenia treatment. No information is available on the predictors of hospitalization during maintenance treatment with olanzapine long-acting injection (olanzapine-LAI) or how the risk of hospitalization differs between olanzapine-LAI and oral olanzapine. This study aimed to identify the predictors...

Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a serious side effect with traditional antipsychotics. Olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic agent with a reported lack of propensity to cause T.D. Recently, few reports of olanzapine induced tardive dystonia and dyskinesia are reported, here authors reported a rare case of neck dyskinesia in a paranoid schizophrenic male who was on olanzapine since last 7 months. C...

Atypical antipsychotic medications are commonly used to treat symptoms of delirium. Olanzapine has been successfully used in the treatment of delirium. However, there have been few case reports of delirium associated with olanzapine. We hereby report a case of delirium associated with olanzapine therapy. Possible risk factors and underlying pathogenesis is discussed.

It has been reported that nizatidine may reduce the weight gain in schizophrenic patients receiving olanzapine treatment. Previous studies have demonstrated a relation between olanzapine-induced weight gain and serum leptin levels. Therefore, in the present study, it was planned to investigate the efficacy of nizatidine on the treatment of olanzapine-induced weight gain, and if available, wheth...

BACKGROUND An advance in the treatment of schizophrenia is the development of long-acting intramuscular formulations of antipsychotics, such as olanzapine long-acting injection (LAI). During clinical trials, a post-injection syndrome characterized by signs of delirium and/or excessive sedation was identified in a small percentage of patients following injection with olanzapine LAI. METHODS Sa...
