In this paper we discuss the design and implementation of an I/O interface for parallel programming environments on clusters of workstations. The PFSLib library offers the functionality of Intel’s parallel file system PFS and is intended to be used for parallel applications using PVM or other messagepassing libraries for workstation clusters. An example of a simple parallel matrix-vector-multip...

In this paper a simple and efficient framework for single human action recognition is proposed. In two parallel processing streams, motion information and static object appearances are gathered by introducing a frame-by-frame learning approach. For each processing stream a Random Forest classifier is separately learned. The final decision is determined by combining both probability functions. T...

Clusters of workstations are becoming popular platforms for parallel computing, but performance on these systems is more complex and harder to predict than on traditional parallel machines. Hence, performance monitoring and analysis is important for understanding application behavior and improving performance. We present a performance monitor for HPVM, a high-performance cluster running Windows...

Parallel image compression on a workstation-cluster is discussed. We introduce a parallel meta-algorithm for image compression which is well suited for every block based image compression scheme. This algorithm is explained in more detail in the case of fractal image compression. We present experimental results of a host/node implementation on a FDDI interconnected workstationcluster using PVM.

In this paper, we dicuss the the design and implementation of the PFSLib library wich offers the functionality of Intel’s parallel file system PFS. It is intended to be used with parallel programming environments like PVM, P4, and NXLib on workstation clusters. We also present preliminary performance results of PFSLib in comparison to NFS.

Recent advantages in network and workstation performance have made clustered computer systems an interesting alternative to massively parallel computers. There are many operating systems, languages, programming environments and tools, used in design, optimization and debugging of parallel programs. This article discusses briefly general issues with cluster SW tools as well as discussing some of...

A scalable workstation is one vision of a mainstream parallel computer: a machine that combines scalable, fine-grain communication facilities for parallel applications with virtual memory and preemptive multiprogramming to support general-purpose workloads. A key challenge in a scalable workstation is the Virtual Network Interface (VNI) problem. The problem is that high performance communicatio...

This thesis describes demand-based coscheduling, a new approach to scheduling parallel computations on multiprogrammed multiprocessors. In demand-based cosche-duling, rather than making the pessimistic assumption that all the processes constituting a parallel job must be simultaneously scheduled in order to achieve good performance, information about which processes are communicating is used in...

Background and Aims: Sewing is one of the occupations where the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders is high. Sewing conditions at the workstation have made them synonymous with musculoskeletal injuries in various areas of the body, particularly pain in the neck, shoulder, and upper back and even waist. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a workstation designed for tailor...

This paper 1 describes a system that facilitates a competitive environment for parallel applications on heterogeneous workstation clusters. The system tries to maximize the speedup of the parallel applications and, at the same time, to allocate workstations ef-ciently and fairly to the applications. It tackles the resource allocation problem in regard to heterogeneity between the workstations a...
