Many limitations of plasmid construction due to the restricted compatibility of various staggered DNA ends can be circumvented if the ends are partially filled with dNTP's and Klenow fragment (1). For example, BamHl or Sau3A ends filled with dATP and dGTP retain a GA 5' extension which will ligate with high efficiency to various other partially filled restricted ends, including the 5' TC extens...
Free convection of power-law liquids in partially filled two-dimensional square containers in upright position is investigated numerically, using a finite element method. Different but constant temperatures are imposed on the container’s side walls; its bottom face is insulated while the liquid body’s free surface is subjected to convective cooling. Flow velocity and heat transfer rates at the ...
This paper deals with the experimental studies of sloshing of liquid in partially filled container subjected to external excitation. An experimental set-up is designed to study the behavior of liquid sloshing in partially filled prismatic container. At every instant of time, slosh amplitude is computed at specified location with the help of capacitance probe. The resulting slosh heights for var...
A compact fiber polarizer is demonstrated by the filling of selected air holes of a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with a liquid. The liquid-filling results in an asymmetric waveguide structure, leading to a large polarization dependent loss. A 6 mm long ethanol-filled PCF exhibits a polarization extinction ratio of ∼18 dB over a wavelength range from 1480 nm to 1600 nm.
A method of computing the concentration field of dissolved material inside an etch-hole is presented. Using a number of assumptions, approximate convection-diffusion equations are formulated, and analytical descriptions for the concentration in different parts of the domain are obtained. By coupling these descriptions the concentration field can be computed. The assumptions and the results are ...
Detonations and deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) are experimentally studied in horizontal pipes which are partially filled with water. The gas layer above the water is stoichiometric hydrogen–oxygen at 1 bar. The detonation wave produces oblique shock waves in the water, which focus at the bottom of the pipe due to the curvature of the walls. This results in peak pressures at the bot...
In this work we study the dynamic behaviour of compound shells of revolution partially filled with an ideal incompressible fluid based on boundary-value problems. New analytical mathematical model with corresponding discrete scheme for the elastic displacements and the dynamic liquid pressure is developed. The discrete scheme is based on the method of discrete singularities. A code to perform t...
The European H2020 project SLOWD is aimed to investigate the fuel sloshing damping effect reduce design loads on aircraft wings. Wings house tanks and are highly flexible structures that can significantly deform under gust loads. In recent experiment by Martinez-Carrascal González-Gutiérrez [“Experimental study of liquid effects a SDOF vertical tank,” J. Fluids Struct. 100, 103172 (2021)], comp...
In many industrial processes granular materials are mixed together in partially filled slowly rotating drums. In this paper a general theoretical framework is developed for the quasi-two-dimensional motion of granular material in a rotating drum. The key assumption is that the body can be divided into a fluid-like and a solid-like region, that are separated by a non-material singular surface at...
