We fabricated triisopropylsilyl (TIPS) pentacene organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) by inkjet printing method and investigated their electrical properties. The film morphology of TIPS pentacene layer and the field-effect mobility of OTFTs were greatly affected by choice of the solvent which TIPS pentacene was dissolved in. Especially the boiling point of a solvent was a critical factor that ...

Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction reveals that a pentacene monolayer, grown on an amorphous SiO2 substrate that is commonly used as a dielectric layer in organic thin film transistors (OTFTs), is crystalline. A preliminary energy-minimized model of the monolayer, based on the GIXD data, reveals that the pentacene molecules adopt a herringbone arrangement with their long axes tilted slightly f...

Three new unsymmetrical anthracenyl-pentacene derivatives have been synthesized, characterized using X-ray crystallography, and used as semiconductors in OTFTs. For one derivative, ambipolar charge carrier transport was observed with a hole mobility of 0.2 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) and an electron mobility of 0.03 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1).

Direct and inverse photoemission spectroscopy are used to investigate the electronic polarization P = P + P induced by the pentacene anion and cation at the Au/pentacene interface. Based on the spectroscopic measurements and on previously published calculations, we determine that the total polarization at the metal interface is approximately 0.67 eV larger than at the surface of the pentacene f...

We apply the bootstrap kernel within time-dependent density functional theory to study the one-dimensional chain of polymer polyphenylenevinylene and molecular crystals of picene and pentacene. The absorption spectra of poly(p-phenylenevinylene) has a bound excitonic peak that is well-reproduced. Pentacene and picene, electronically similar materials, have remarkably different excitonic physics...

The lattice of 5,7,12,14-tetrahydro-5,14:7,12-bis([1,2]benzeno)pentacene-6,13dione, C34H20O2, at 173 K has triclinic (P1) symmetry and crystallizes with four independent half-molecules in the asymmetric unit. Each molecule is generated from a C17H10O substructure through an inversion center at the centroid of the central quinone ring, generating a wide H-shaped molecule, with a dihedral angle b...

The field of molecular electronics aims at using single molecules as functional building blocks for electronics components, such as switches, rectifiers or transistors. A key challenge is to perform measurements with atomistic control over the alignment of the molecule and its contacting electrodes. Here we use atomic force microscopy to examine charge transfer between weakly coupled pentacene ...

We have prepared, characterized and surveyed device performance for a series of electron deficient pentacenes for use as acceptors in polymer bulk heterojunction solar cells, using P3HT as the donor material. All of the materials reported here behaved as acceptors, and variations in the position and nature of the electron-withdrawing group on the pentacene core allowed tuning of device open-cir...
