Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) represent a group of highly heterogeneous human malignancies often with multiple histological origins, divergent differentiation patterns, and diverse immunohistochemical presentations. The differential diagnosis of MPNST from other spindle cell neoplasms poses great challenges for pathologists. This report provides a mini-review of these unique ...
Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is the leading cause of mortality in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1. In 2002, an MPNST consensus statement reviewed the current knowledge and provided guidance for the diagnosis and management of MPNST. Although the improvement in clinical outcome has not changed, substantial progress has been made in understanding the natural history and ...
Background: Valproic acid (VPA) is used to be an effective anti-epileptic drug and mood stabilizer. It has recently been demonstrated that VPA could promote neurite outgrowth, activate the extracellular signal regulated kinase pathway, and increases bcl-2 and growth cone-associated protein 43 levels in spinal cord. In the present research we demonstrate the effect of VPA on peripheral nerve r...
Schwannomas arise from Schwann cells of the peripheral nerve sheath. The most common locations include the head, neck, and extensor surfaces of the extremities. Intramammary schwannomas are very rare and account for only 2.6% of schwannomas. A review of the English literature reveals 27 such cases of breast schwannoma. In this paper we describe another such rare case.
Neuregulin-1 (NRG1) plays a crucial role in axoglial signaling during the development of the peripheral nervous system, but its importance in adulthood after peripheral nerve injury remains unclear. We used single-neuron labeling with inducible Cre-mediated knock-out animals, which enabled visualization of a subset of adult myelinated sensory and motoneurons neurons in which Nrg1 was inducibly ...
We present an extremely unusual case of an extratemporal facial nerve malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) arising from preexistent intratemporal neurofibroma, illustrating a difficulty in discriminating between perineural spread of the MPNST and the preexistent intratemporal neurofibroma on preoperative radiographic images. The most interesting point was that preoperative CT scan an...
Pan...
Hybrid peripheral nerve sheath tumors (HPNST) are relatively recently described tumors. With ongoing research, a considerable amount of important findings have been made, much of which has substantial clinical implications. However, a comprehensive review of the whole topic has not been published in the literature so far. In the presented manuscript, the various hybrid tumors are discussed sepa...
Here we present the case of a 36-year-old man who was found to have a symptomatic malignant neural sheath tumor growing from the C2 nerve root following a period of progressively worsening headaches. The patient was successfully treated with surgical resection resulting in resolution of cranial nerve deficits. Though uncommon, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor must be considered in the di...
