The proteins encoded by psaA and psaB form a heterodimer, an essential compound of photosystem; while the protein encoded by psbC binds with chlorophyll a in photosystem II, serving as antennae in photosystem. Here we report that a heterocyclic brominated flame retardant, tris(2,3-dibromopropyl) isocyanurate (TBC), inhibited the expression of psaA and psbC, then leads to the decrease of Nannoch...

Thylakoid membranes of the thermophilic cyanobacterium Phormidium laminosum have been fractionated into photosystem II and photosystem I particles. These fractions have been characterized by their partial electron transport activities, and biochemical and spectral properties. Exoplasmic fracture face and protoplasmic fracture face particles in the unfractionated thylakoid membranes were shown t...

A photosynthetic organism is subjected to photo-oxidative stress when more light energy is absorbed than is used in photosynthesis. In the light, highly reactive singlet oxygen can be produced via triplet chlorophyll formation in the reaction centre of photosystem II and in the antenna system. In the antenna, triplet chlorophyll is produced directly by excited singlet chlorophyll, while in the ...

The dioxygen we breathe is formed by light-induced oxidation of water in photosystem II. O2 formation takes place at a catalytic manganese cluster within milliseconds after the photosystem II reaction centre is excited by three single-turnover flashes. Here we present combined X-ray emission spectra and diffraction data of 2-flash (2F) and 3-flash (3F) photosystem II samples, and of a transient...

Alb3 homologs Oxa1 and YidC have been shown to be required for the integration of newly synthesized proteins into membranes. Here, we show that although Alb3.1p is not required for integration of the plastid-encoded photosystem II core subunit D1 into the thylakoid membrane of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, the insertion of D1 into functional photosystem II complexes is retarded in the Alb3.1 delet...

The concentration of photosystem II was determined in thylakoids of dwarf peas by the use of the following methods: absorption change at 325 nm; atrazine binding; and flash yields of oxygen evolution (Emerson-Arnold method), of protons from oxidation of water, and of reduction of DCIP. For the first time all of the flash-yield measurements have been done on the same sample and give equivalent v...

Antenna systems of plants and green algae are made up of pigment-protein complexes belonging to the light-harvesting complex (LHC) multigene family. LHCs increase the light-harvesting cross-section of photosystems I and II and catalyze photoprotective reactions that prevent light-induced damage in an oxygenic environment. The genome of the moss Physcomitrella patens contains two genes encoding ...

Effective absorption cross-sections for O(2) production by Porphyridium cruentum were measured at 546 and 596 nanometers. Although all photosystem II reaction centers are energetically coupled to phycobilisomes, any single phycobilisome acts as antenna for several photosystem II reaction centers. The cross-section measured in state I was 50% larger than that measured in state II.
