Interstitial lung disease (ILD) represents a collection of lung disorders with a lethal trajectory with few therapeutic options with the exception of lung transplantation. Various extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) configurations have been used for bridge to transplant (BTT), yet no optimal configuration has been clearly demonstrated. Using a cardiopulmonary simulation, we assessed diff...

Driven by a wide range of contemporary applications, statistical inference for covariance structures has been an active area of current research in high-dimensional statistics. This paper provides a selective survey of some recent developments in hypothesis testing for high-dimensional covariance structures, including global testing for the overall pattern of the covariance structures and simul...

Afterbirth ingestion by nonhuman mammalian mothers has a number of benefits: (1) increasing the interaction between the mother and infant; (2) potentiating pregnancy-mediated analgesia in the delivering mother; (3) potentiating maternal brain opioid circuits that facilitate the onset of caretaking behavior; and (4) suppressing postpartum pseudopregnancy. Childbirth is fraught with additional pr...

This paper deals with an important issue of forensic entomology: the estimation of the temperature in a ”maggot mass”. An agent-based model of the thermoregulation behaviour of fly (Protophormia terraenovae) larvae is described. Simulation results show that the model reproduces an important observed pattern and thus, might be used in entomological expertises.

BACKGROUND Hospitals are increasingly compared based on clinical outcomes adjusted for severity of illness. Multiple methods exist to adjust for differences between patients. The challenge for consumers of this information, both the public and healthcare providers, is interpreting differences in risk adjustment models particularly when models differ in their use of administrative and physiologi...

BACKGROUND In preclinical models, VEGF is a potent stimulant of both physiologic and pathologic angiogenesis. Conversely, anti-VEGF regimens have successfully inhibited angiogenesis both in vitro and in vivo. We hypothesized that VEGF would stimulate both physiologic and pathologic angiogenesis in a human-based fibrin-thrombin clot angiogenesis assay. We further speculated that anti-VEGF regime...

Biofeedback involves the monitoring and use of physiologic information to teach patients to modify specific physiologic functions. Common modalities for biofeedback include surface electromyography, respiration rate and depth, skin surface temperature, cardiovascular reactivity, and electrodermal response. Clinical biofeedback therapy broadly involves either the direct feedback learning model o...
