This paper is to provide some new generalizations of the Pick Theorem. We first derive a point-set version of the Pick Theorem for an arbitrary bounded lattice polyhedron. Then, we use the idea of a weight function of [2] to obtain a weighted version. Other Pick type theorems known to the author for the integral lattice Z2 are reduced to some special cases of this generalization. Finally, using...

We present 2 cases of Niemann Pick disease, type B with secondary sea-blue histiocytosis. Strikingly, in both cases the Pick cells were positive for tartrate resistant acid phosphatase, a finding hitherto described only in Gaucher cells. This report highlights the importance of this finding as a potential cytochemical diagnostic pitfall in the diagnosis of Niemann Pick disease.

The Niemann-Pick disease group is now divided into two distinct entities: (1) acid sphingomyelinase-deficient Niemann-Pick disease (ASM-deficient NPD) resulting from mutations in the SMPD1 gene and encompassing type A and type B as well as intermediate forms; (2) Niemann-Pick disease type C (NP-C) including also type D, resulting from mutations in either the NPC1 or the NPC2 gene. Both Niemann-...

Albert Niemann

In 1914 Albert Niemann, a German pediatrician who primarily studied infant metabolism, published a description of an Ashkenazi Jewish infant with jaundice [5], nervous system and brain impairments, swollen lymph nodes (lymphadenopathy), and an enlarged liver and spleen (hepatosplenomegaly). He reported that these anatomical disturbances resulted in the premature death of the child at the age of...

Next vesicle SNAP'd up ecretory vesicles wishing to play follow-the-leader use a particular SNARE to show them where the leader went, as shown by Takahashi et al. on page 255. Vesicles heading to the plasma membrane sometimes selectively bind to another that has already fused there. This process, called sequential exocytosis, is efficient at large-scale secretion because vesicles in the cytosol...

The effect of substrate material pick up by the Cu wire tail on the hardness of the subsequently formed free air ball (FAB) is investigated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and micro-hardness test. The Cu wire bonds are made on Au metallization. Wire residue is not found on the imprint the tail bond leaves on the metallization, but fracture of the substrate metallization is evident. SEM ...

We study the Nevanlinna-Pick problem for a class of subalgebras of H∞. This class includes algebras of analytic functions on embedded disks, the algebras of finite codimension in H∞ and the algebra of bounded analytic functions on a multiply connected domain. Our approach uses a distance formula that generalizes Sarason’s [18] work. We also investigate the difference between scalar-valued and m...

doi:10.5152/tjh.2011.15 The peripheral blood smear is an easy, inexpensive, and very useful diagnostic method. Although some think that it has lost its importance following the development of new automated complete blood counts, the peripheral blood smear should remain a primary diagnostic tool for clinicians, especially pediatricians. Peripheral blood smears aid clinicians in choosing the appr...
