Ti-6Al-4V alloy attracting attention as a biomaterial features excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, and super plasticity, so enables the forming of denture bases of complicated shapes. However, this alloy contains aluminum and vanadium liable to do serious harm to human bodies [1,2], so actual use will require prevention of direct contact with biological tissues. In our pre...

This paper discusses several methods for manufacturing ultra-sharp probes, with applications geared toward, but not limited to, scanning microscopy (STM, AFM) and intra-cellular recordings of neural signals. We present recipes for making tungsten, platinum/iridium alloy, and nanotube fibril tips. Electrical isolation methods using Parylene-C or PMMA are described.

Platinum and Pt alloy nanoparticles supported on carbon are the state of the art electrocatalysts in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. To develop a better understanding on how material design can influence the degradation processes on the nanoscale, three specific Pt/C catalysts with different structural characteristics were investigated in depth: a conventional Pt/Vulcan catalyst with a par...

Abstract A high-vanadium alloy composite layer was prepared on the surface of a carbon steel using cast technology, and wear properties were investigated. The results showed that microstructure composed primary vanadium carbides (VC), flake martensite, residual austenite, fine VC. hardness 63 HRC. abrasive resistance impact increased by 60% 26%, respectively, compared with those high-chromium i...

Methanol is a hydrogen carrier for fuel cells and its chemical transformations are of great current interest. Methanol oxidation by vanadium oxides is well studied, hence, serves as a good measure for catalytic activity. Arrays of VO2 nanowires grown on r-cut sapphire prove to be unique for the in situ catalytic activity tests. Here, we present size and morphology dependent activity of Platinum...

Alloys based on the near-equiatomic FeCo offer exceptional magnetic properties. The equiatomic alloy was ‘invented’ in 1929, it offers a saturation hardly lower than that of the maximum obtained for Fe-0.35Co, with higher permeability and a lower coercivity than the latter. However, this alloy remained without industrial application, mainly because of its extreme brittleness. Only with the addi...

This study was conducted to evaluate the biocompatibility of titanium-nickel shape memory alloy used as a medical implant material. The authors carried out the following electrochemical corrosion test and in vivo and in vitro biological tests for the alloy and some metal and alloys clinically used previously to compare the intensities concerned with the biological reactions, that is, (1) anodic...
